Raab can be explored through a range of themes: the Kellergröppe tells the story of ice storage in the past, the local heritage house offers insights into local crafts and domestic culture, while trails and recurring events provide further perspectives. When planning your visit, you can focus on historic sites, a walking route, a cultural event or leisure time at the outdoor swimming pool.

Kellergröppe and Planning Your Visit

The Kellergröppe in Raab dates back to 1620. In the ice cellar, the museum display explains how ice collected in winter was kept for months. This brings a specific past practice into focus: storing ice beyond the winter season. Visits to the beer-sand cellar museum are possible on the first Saturday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., as well as by appointment. If you are planning a museum visit, check the opening times in advance. Parking is not possible directly by the Kellergröppe or in the adjacent residential area; please use the marked parking spaces.

Local Heritage House, Brewing History and Heritage Protection

The Raab local heritage house offers another historical perspective. The building is more than 300 years old, and its owners can be traced back to 1644. The craft museum in the heritage house showcases traditional local crafts, including cooperage, carpentry, joinery and shoemaking. It also depicts the lower-middle-class domestic culture of Raab’s former residents. In this way, craft activities and everyday home life stand side by side as distinct aspects of local history.

The Bräustüberl Museum has been housed in Raab since 1993 and documents the town’s brewing history. This gives it a distinct focus alongside crafts and domestic culture. The Catholic parish church of St. Michael is also part of Raab’s history: it is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. The associated entry in the heritage register is not legally binding.

Trails with Different Themes

The Kellergröppenweg starts and ends at Raab School Centre. From there, it passes through the Kellergröppe and continues to the Maria Bründl pilgrimage church. The Mühlenweg has a different historical focus: its name recalls the mills that once stood along the Bründlbach and Raaber Bach streams. A detour to the source of the Raaber Bach is possible from the Mühlenweg. The trails therefore have distinct themes: the Kellergröppenweg focuses on the Kellergröppe and pilgrimage church as its named stops, while the Mühlenweg highlights the history of the former mills and the option of a detour to the source.

Events and Leisure

Recurring events can also be a reason to visit Raab. The Raab fire brigade holds the traditional Kellerfest in the sand cellars every two years. The Michaelimarkt is organised annually by local businesses. The Narraabia carnival guild also holds a carnival parade in Raab every two years. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the relevant date in advance. The Kunst und Kultur association also presents various concerts and art exhibitions in Raab.

Raab outdoor swimming pool offers a different kind of leisure activity. It has a tradition spanning more than 100 years and has been modernised and expanded several times over the years. The facility covers 7,000 m² and offers a varied range of pools. As facilities may change, it is a good idea to check the latest operating information before planning a visit.
