In Sankt Ulrich im Mühlkreis, hops feature as a landscape theme, a hiking option and part of the regional offering. The Great Hop Trail is a 12-kilometre circular route; along the Small Hop Trail, you can see hop trellises. The town’s history includes Ulrich Chapel, which is thought to date back to the 11th century. This gives you several different ways to plan your visit: a hike connected with hop cultivation, ecclesiastical architectural history, or regional food and products.

Hop trails with different points of interest

The Great Hop Trail is a 12-kilometre circular route in Sankt Ulrich im Mühlkreis. Its length and circular layout give you two specific points to consider when planning your trip: the distance provides a clear sense of the hike’s scope, while the circular route makes it a complete loop. The Great Hop Trail also offers the opportunity to see hop fields, connecting the hike with a view of hop cultivation in the landscape.

The Small Hop Trail has a different focus. Along the route, you can see hop trellises. These structures, on which hops grow, give you a clear picture of how they are cultivated. If you are particularly interested in the structures used in hop cultivation, this is the trail’s specific point of interest. By contrast, the Great Hop Trail focuses on its circular layout and length, as well as the opportunity to see hop fields.

The two trails can therefore be distinguished by their respective features: the Great Hop Trail’s 12-kilometre distance and circular layout give you a sense of the hike’s scope, while the hop trellises are the Small Hop Trail’s distinctive connection to the landscape.

Ulrich Chapel and local history

Ulrich Chapel adds a local-history dimension to the hop trails. It is today’s Ulrich Chapel, formerly the Church of St. Ulrich. The building is thought to have been constructed as early as the 11th century; the church was first mentioned in a document in 1180. The presumed construction date and the first documented mention are two different points in time: one indicates a possible date of origin, while the other marks the first written record.

Only the former church’s Gothic choir, or presbytery, remains. The furnishings of Ulrich Chapel also include wooden statues carved of Saint Ulrich, Saint Norbert and Saint Augustine. They date from around 1680. The chapel thus brings together an early but only presumed construction history, a surviving Gothic architectural feature and statues from a considerably later period.
