The Lower Inn European Protected Area, the Roman Cycle Path that begins in Mühlheim, and the parish church with its tower, visible from far away, show three different sides of Mühlheim Am Inn. For planning your trip, you can consider nature, cycling and architectural history as separate focuses: the riverside landscape represents protected habitats, the cycle path connects the area with a theme from Roman times, and the parish church brings together several building phases.

The Inn Landscape and Protected Nature

The Lower Inn European Protected Area covers a total of 864 hectares and includes, among other places, the municipality of Mühlheim Am Inn. Mühlheim is therefore one of the municipalities within the protected area; the 864 hectares refer to the area as a whole. Along the banks of the Inn near Mühlheim, expansive floodplain forests and reed beds shape the landscape. They provide ideal living conditions for hundreds of bird species. You can experience the Lower Inn nature reserve on bike rides or walks along the protected area.

Cycling with a Link to Roman Times

The Inn Cycle Path connects to Mühlheim and runs from Passau to Lake Attersee. The Roman Cycle Path begins in Mühlheim as a continuation; it offers insights into the life and activities of the Romans in this area. There is a clear distinction when choosing a route: the Inn Cycle Path connects Passau and Lake Attersee, while the Roman Cycle Path focuses on its connection to Roman history.

The rest stop in Mühlheim on the Roman Cycle Path has tables and benches, three-part information panels and an audio guide. This lets you combine a cycling route with a break and information on site.

Summer at the Lake and Fishing

The natural Mühlheim bathing lake, covering around three hectares, is an option during the warm summer months: it then offers swimming and a variety of water activities for all age groups. Fishing permits for Ranftl Fishing Lake are paid for directly at the lake. As the arrangement may change, we recommend calling the Ranftl family before your fishing trip at 043/7723/42555 or 043/7723/42904.

To choose between the two lakes, consider what you want to do: Mühlheim bathing lake is for summer swimming and water activities; at Ranftl Fishing Lake, fishing permits and paying for them at the lake are the practical considerations.

Church, Tower and Castle

Mühlheim Parish Church combines several building phases. Most of the present-day church dates from the Gothic renovation around 1500; in the 18th century, the church was altered and decorated in the Baroque style. Details include stucco work from the Vierthaler art school. The 48-meter-high church tower is a landmark of Mühlheim and is visible from far away. Both the Gothic renovation and the later Baroque design are part of the church’s present-day appearance.

Today’s Mühlheim Castle was rebuilt in 1898, is privately owned and cannot be visited inside.
