Eitzing combines a rich local history with opportunities for hiking and cycling. Historical points of interest include the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the rectory and the history of the Edle von Izing noble family. Outdoors, the Probenzing Loop and trails along the Kretschbach stream lead into the hilly surroundings; the Antiesen Cycle Path also runs right through the village. This allows you to make cultural history and outdoor activity different focal points of your stay.

Church history and historical points of interest

In the 12th century, a magnificent castle belonging to the Edle von Izing noble family stood on a hill in Eitzing. From the 14th century onwards, Eitzing became better known through the long rule of the Edle zu Eitzing noble family. These historical connections date back a long way; they tell the story of a former castle and a period of rule, not of a sightseeing attraction available today.

The church’s history can also be put in context: from around 1400 to 1785, Eitzing was a filial church of the parish of Aurolzmünster. The rectory was built under Emperor Joseph II (1780–1790) and rebuilt in 1849. The Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the cemetery in Eitzing are protected as historic monuments by decree. Since monument lists can change, check the current status if the protection status is important for your plans.

Cantemus is also part of the local church culture: the Eitzing church choir has a history of over 100 years, and its youth choir organises services independently. Individual dates may change. Anyone interested in a vibrant community culture will find, alongside the historic buildings, a connection to the village’s musical tradition.

Hiking and cycling around Eitzing

The Probenzing Loop is a circular hiking trail approximately 4.4 kilometres long around Eitzing. You can also hike along the Kretschbach stream; it lies in a hilly area that stretches out on both sides of it. The circular hike and the trail along the stream offer two different ways to enjoy outdoor activity in the village: one is described as a named loop of approximate length, while the other follows the watercourse.

Cycling is also a local leisure activity. The Antiesen Cycle Path runs right through Eitzing. Check current route conditions before setting out. Maps showing public hiking trails are available from the municipality; availability of printed maps may change. Anglers consider the Kretschbach an ideal fishing spot, adding to the stream’s recreational opportunities.

Leisure activities in the village

Families can enjoy a centrally located playground with play equipment for children of all ages. There is a public toilet right next to it. Facilities and their condition may change; if you depend on a particular amenity, check its current status.

The all-weather court offers opportunities to play tennis, basketball and volleyball. It can be booked by contacting the municipality. This requires a different kind of planning than the trails described as freely accessible: if you want to use the court, you need to contact the municipality.

The visitor programme at Biohof Zeilinger can be supplemented with sheep milking and feeding, milk tasting and hay jumping. These activities are optional additions to the programme. This means that, alongside local history and trails, Eitzing also offers an agricultural experience. When planning, you can choose between historical topics, outdoor activity, sports facilities and the optional farm programme according to your interests.
