Discover Traun through its castle history and regional art, as well as its waterside and green spaces. The city offers different starting points for choosing the focus of your stay: exhibitions and a museum provide cultural highlights, while walking paths, a bathing lake and a forest nature trail appeal to other interests.
Castle History, Art and Collections
Traun Castle is based on a moated castle dating from the 12th century. Its circular enclosure houses a freely accessible exhibition on the history of the castle and the nobility. An exhibition in the attic showcases the history of the Abensperg-Traun family and the castle. It therefore presents both the history of the building and that of the family associated with it.
The art room hosts exhibitions by the regional art scene. Traun Castle also serves as a venue for classical concerts. Those interested in art and culture can explore a variety of subjects here: regional artistic perspectives, as well as castle history and classical music.
The museum at Steinhumergut offers a different perspective on the past. It houses more than 3,000 exhibits. The collection includes farming equipment, household items, documents, deeds and photographs. These varied objects and written records give the collection a broad scope, ranging from everyday household items to documentary records. This offers a distinct focus alongside the exhibitions at the castle.
Bathing Lake, Activities and Green Spaces
Oedt bathing lake in Traun is a 99,000-square-metre groundwater lake with a depth of up to six metres. A promenade along its shore invites you to enjoy long walks. The stated size refers to the water surface, while the promenade provides a separate way to enjoy a stay by the lake. The bathing centre also has an outdoor pool with an L-shaped 50-metre pool and an adjoining non-swimmer area.
The Renata Hönisch Motorikpark® is free for the public to use. It consists of four groups of exercise equipment and is designed as a training area for young and old alike. This sets it apart from the walking paths: the focus here is on the equipment and training, while the lakeside promenade invites you to walk.
The park surrounding Traun Castle, in the heart of the city, offers green spaces, mature trees and the castle's moat as places to relax. Another described park is in Alt-St. Martin, directly beside the MĂĽhlbach stream. Covering around 2.5 hectares, it features century-old trees, gravel paths, park benches, play equipment and green spaces for walking and relaxing. The two park descriptions highlight different features: one focuses on its central location by the castle, the other on the combination of the MĂĽhlbach, paths and green spaces.
The forest nature trail combines information with forest education stations. Around 40 newly designed signs provide information about various tree and shrub species, the forest and its importance to people. The new stations let you experience the forest with all your senses. If you prefer to explore nature by bicycle rather than on foot, you can also include the Roman Cycle Route in your plans: it has run through Traun since 2009.
When choosing accommodation in Traun, you can start by considering your preferred focus: castle and collection history, regional art, or activities and green spaces. The options differ in both subject and form, so you can choose what you want your stay in the city to centre on.
