Ten stops over 2.0 kilometres, a historic church and a bathing island in the town centre give Traunkirchen a clear focus: culture can be combined with walks and a stay by the water.

Trails and Local History

The Traunkirchen peninsula is home to a lakeside settlement dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The ARCHEKULT archaeological exhibition is another stop for anyone interested in history. From May to September, it is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm; from October to April, on Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Check the opening hours before travelling: the seasonal weekly schedule determines when you can plan a visit.

The historic “Abbacia Trunseo” themed trail has ten stages and leads from the war memorial in the town square to Klosterplatz. The free, easy route is 2.0 kilometres long. This provides a clearly defined walking option; trail conditions may change. Another way to explore local attractions is the “Via Historica”: 15 decorated enamel plaques guide visitors from the town centre around and up Johannesberg, through the Seetor and to the parish church.

Churches, Calvary Hill and Local Traditions

Calvary Hill can be reached via four devotional chapels. It is home to the oldest Calvary chapel in the Salzkammergut, completed in 1699 and featuring a Baroque crucifixion group. Johannesberg also has a long religious and historical significance: it is regarded as an ancient sacred site. Johannesberg Chapel is first mentioned in written records in 1356; its date of construction is not known with certainty.

The history of the parish church can be traced through two dates: the Jesuits from Passau took over the monastery in 1622. After the second fire in 1632, the parish church was built in its present Baroque form. Inside, the Fisherman’s Pulpit, carved in 1753, depicts the miracle of the great catch of fish.

Two distinct events are part of local tradition. The traditional AntlaĂź singing concludes with a morning procession of supplication up Calvary Hill; its annual timing follows the Easter calendar. The annual Corpus Christi procession on the lake begins at the Seetor. Dates and weather-dependent arrangements may vary.

Bathing Island, Hiking and Other Activities

The free-to-use “Badeinsel” bathing area is at the foot of Johannesberg, right in the town centre. The artificially constructed island is kidney-shaped, up to 10 metres wide and about 25 metres long. Together with two dams, it forms a ring of land around a swimming area in the lake. Seasonal conditions may affect operations. If you are interested in Lake Traunsee underwater, a diving school in Traunkirchen offers the opportunity to dive there. Ask about current booking arrangements in advance.

A well-marked network of trails opens up a hiking area in Traunkirchen. A family-friendly forest road, suitable for pushchairs, leads to Hochsteinalm; in places, it offers views across Lake Traunsee towards Traunstein. Visitors can feed alpacas, goats and sheep at Hochsteinalm. Confirm the current arrangements for this activity before your trip.

For a bike ride, the easy 4.5-kilometre Salzkammergut Cycle Path to Ebensee starts in the town square. The difference in distance between the walking routes is easy to see: the “Abbacia Trunseo” themed trail is 2.0 kilometres long, while the cycle route is 4.5 kilometres. These figures describe different routes and activities; choose according to the type of activity you have planned.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Accommodation

If the exhibition is important to your trip, check your dates against its seasonal weekend opening hours. For the procession, take the dates and weather-dependent arrangements into account; conditions on the trails may also change. Route 30/35 of the Salzkammergut Shuttle also offers transfer options: at the town square and other stops to OĂ–VV bus routes, and at Traunkirchen station to Ă–BB train services. Check the timetables before travelling.
