Neukirchen offers clearly distinct themes for a stay: the forest nature trail, the Maria Schnee parish church and Viechtauer Heimathaus, as well as the natural setting of Taferlklaussee. At the lake, the landscape is connected with a musical tradition that returns every year. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider which focus matters most to you during your time in Neukirchen.

Forest Trails and Route Guidance

The WWW Windlegernweg is a forest nature trail from Neukirchen to Windlegern. It highlights the special features and functions of the forest. Anyone interested in how the forest functions as a habitat will find a clearly defined theme for a walk here.

The BergeSeen Trail 01 leads to Neukirchen at an elevation of 743 m. From the square in front of the church, the signs point towards Viechtauer Heimathaus and the Windlegernweg. Another hiking suggestion is the Neukirchen–Almgasthof Windlegern–Neukirchen loop: after a short descent, it leads to Almgasthof Windlegern. Trail conditions can change locally; check conditions before setting out.

Church and Regional History

The parish church of Neukirchen bei AltmĂĽnster is dedicated to Maria Schnee. The simple Baroque church was built in 1754 and has a barrel vault. A barrel vault is an arched ceiling that extends lengthwise; the term thus describes a specific architectural feature.

The high altar also tells its own story from the church’s history: it originally stood in Vienna’s Minoritenkirche and was installed in Neukirchen around 1780. The year the church was built and the approximate date the altar was installed mark two different points in time—the church was built first, and the altar came to Neukirchen later.

Viechtauer Heimathaus is located in Rabenwies, a house on a hill above the AltmĂĽnster village of Neukirchen. It was built in the typical architectural style of the Viechtau. The museum illustrates the lives of the local population around a hundred years ago, with a focus on traditional domestic crafts, especially carving and woodturning.

These two themes give the house a clear focus: alongside life in the past, craftsmanship takes centre stage. Carving and woodturning are specific examples of traditional domestic crafts. This makes it possible to explore local history not only through buildings, but also through everyday life and craftsmanship.

Taferlklaussee: Nature and Tradition

The Taferlklaussee nature reserve in Neukirchen includes a particularly precious raised bog as well as very rare plant species. A well-maintained hiking trail circles the lake in about half an hour, keeping the water constantly in view along the way. Unlike the Windlegernweg, which focuses on the forest, the lake is at the centre of this walk.

The Echoblasen takes place every year at Taferlklaussee on 15 August. Several groups of brass players perform melodies, yodels and folk tunes across the lake. The lake is therefore both a protected natural area and the setting for a musical tradition held on a fixed date, 15 August.
