Gschwandt is hilly and wooded. A Late Gothic parish church, the hiking trail along the Wasserlosen Bach and the Traunseetram provide different points of reference for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel, you could first consider whether local history, walking or a special flying experience should shape your travel plans. These themes offer different points of focus: for the tram, check the timetable for your travel date; for a passenger flight, registration with the club is required.
Getting around the area by tram
The Traunseetram, operated by Stern & Hafferl, connects Gmunden and Vorchdorf; Gschwandt is directly on the route. Stops within the local area include Neuhub, Gschwandt Schule, Gschwandt-Rabesberg, Unterm Wald and Baumgarten-Waldbach. If you are arriving by tram or planning journeys, check the timetable for your travel date. The stops provide specific place names to help you find your way, while the timetable shows which connection suits your schedule.
Late Gothic architecture and local history
Gschwandt Parish Church is a single-nave Late Gothic rural church, built in the second half of the 15th century. Features that have been preserved include a west gallery with a net-rib vault, a Gothic south portal with a porch, and a north portal dating from the time of construction. “Single-nave” describes a building with one main nave; a net-rib vault is characterized by ribs arranged in a net-like pattern. This breaks down the architectural description into individual elements rather than describing the church simply as Late Gothic. Other Late Gothic elements include a sculpture of Saint Sebastian and several panel paintings depicting various saints, each dating from around 1500.
The area’s history goes back further than the church: a Roman-era settlement existed along the Wasserlosen Bach from around 80 to 250 AD. The same stream is also a landmark for hiking trail 2. A parish report from May 2026 also describes a traditional May devotion with Marian hymns at the former Baumgartenwirt. Together, these topics illustrate different historical and religious connections in Gschwandt.
Along the Wasserlosen Bach and toward Flachberg
Hiking trail 2 runs along the Wasserlosen Bach and connects with hiking trail 1 in the direction of Flachberg. Flachberg itself is a 781 m-high mountain in the foothills of the Alps, close to Gschwandt; it is about an hour’s walk from Gschwandt. These are two different points of reference for planning: trail 2 describes the route along the stream and the connection toward Flachberg, while the approximate one-hour walk refers to the time it takes to reach the mountain from Gschwandt. Check local conditions before setting out.
A passenger flight as a different way to spend your time
Gmunden-Laakirchen Airfield is located in Gschwandt, east of Gmunden and Lake Traunsee. On a passenger flight at Gmunden Airfield, you take the controls of a Katana or a Falke motor glider for about 20 minutes and make two landings. Registration with the club’s flight instructors is required. The time estimates offer different measures for planning your day: the flight takes about 20 minutes, while the walk to Flachberg takes about an hour. This lets you compare a short flight with a longer walk without combining the two into a single route.
