Lake Gosau lies at the end of the Gosau Valley in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut region, nestled between the Gosaukamm range and the Dachstein. Gosau has green alpine meadows and views of the Dachstein Glacier and the Gosaukamm massif. There is also a guided hike at Gosau’s Löckenmoos raised bog and an open-air museum with a historic farmhouse. This gives you a choice of different nature and cultural experiences during your stay in Gosau.

At Lake Gosau: A Loop or a Trail to the Other Lakes

The loop around Lake Gosau takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The trail is mostly flat and is also suitable for strollers. Another walking option leads from Vorderer Gosausee via Gosaulacke to Hinterer Gosausee; this route takes about 1.5 hours. The time estimates overlap, but the destinations and routes differ: the key choice is whether you want to walk around the lake or go via Gosaulacke to Hinterer Gosausee.

You can also explore the lake from the water: electric boats and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent at Lake Gosau. The lake offers good conditions for diving, and ice diving is also possible in winter. If you’re interested in this activity, it’s another way to spend time at the lake, in addition to walking the trails.

Distinguish Between Alpine Meadow Trails and the Via Ferrata

The Gosaukammbahn cable car takes you from Lake Gosau to Zwieselalm in four minutes. From there, well-marked trails suitable for strollers cross lush alpine meadows and green mountain forests. These trails offer a different experience from the Donnerkogel via ferrata, which is suitable for experienced climbers and is not a beginner route. This information can help you choose between walking trails and a via ferrata specifically suited to experienced climbers.

A Guided Hike Through Löckenmoos

The guided hike at Gosau’s Löckenmoos raised bog follows historic paths through the blanket bog. Along the way, you’ll find a small bog lake, karst caves, rare plants and still-active whetstone quarries. Löckenmoos offers a distinct experience from the trails around Lake Gosau, bringing together a guided tour and the raised bog’s distinctive landscape features.

A Look at Gosau’s Architectural History

The Gosau Open-Air Museum includes the Schmiedbauer complex. It comprises a farmhouse dating from around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, a stable and various outbuildings. The complex offers a tangible connection to architectural history and adds a cultural focus to the area’s natural attractions. If you’re interested in both landscape and history, you can take these different themes into account when planning your stay.

Getting There by Train and Bus

After arriving by train at Steeg/Gosau, you can continue by bus 542 towards Lake Gosau. Route 542 also runs between Bad Ischl and Lake Gosau. Bus route 470 connects Abtenau with Gosau. When planning your journey, consider your starting point and the appropriate route; check the timetable for your connection before travelling.
