Bad Zell combines local history with a variety of ways to explore the surrounding area: the Late Gothic parish church stands on the market square, an ancient spring is a pilgrimage destination, and several trails pass through natural and cultural landscapes. For planning, it helps to distinguish between a guided option with seasonal dates, a 48-kilometre hiking trail and shorter routes with clearly described starting points.

Church and history of Bad Zell

At the lower end of the market square, the Late Gothic parish church stands on a rocky outcrop above the Kettenbach stream. Its location connects a striking feature of the terrain with the town centre. Schloss Zellhof is another point of interest for anyone interested in Bad Zell’s history: what remains today is the two-storey south and west residential wing, a ruined service wing and the former Baroque chapel. The buildings, preserved to varying degrees, give a clear picture of what remains of the former complex.

The history of the Zellhof estate also includes the Wagenlehner trial. One of Upper Austria’s last major witch trials took place there from 1729 to 1731. The church, castle remains and trial history each offer a different perspective: sacred architecture, surviving historic buildings and a clearly dated event. This makes it possible to plan a culturally focused stay even if hiking is not the main activity.

Hiking trails and guided tours

The Stoakraftweg runs for 48 kilometres through the hiking paradise of MĂĽhlviertel Nature Park and past natural and cultural sites in Allerheiligen, Bad Zell, Rechberg and St. Thomas am Blasenstein. Its distinctive feature for planning is that it connects several municipalities and a variety of landscapes and cultural sites. Occasional diversions are possible; check the current route before setting out.

The guided Johannesweg tours offered by the Bad Zell Tourism Association provide a different format. They run from St. John’s Church in Bad Zell to the Johannesbrunnen spring in Pierbach. The offer is seasonal, so it is a good idea to check the current dates before planning or booking a tour. After each day’s stage, a shuttle bus takes participants back to Bad Zell. The route, guided tour and return transport are all part of this option; check the dates if you are interested in this organised version.

The Lebensquell loop No. 10 is also described as a Nordic walking route. It starts directly at the Lebensquell health centre or at the primary school car park. Check the current signs at the starting point. Alongside the cross-municipal Stoakraftweg and the guided Johannesweg tours, this provides clearly identified starting points for another way to get active.

Spring, pilgrimage destination and local heritage

Cella HedwigsbrĂĽndl is an ancient spring close to Bad Zell. Many people seeking healing make a pilgrimage there today. The spring offers a different focus from the trails: here, the spring and pilgrimage destination take centre stage, while the routes connect natural and cultural sites or guided day stages.

The Erdställe at the Zum Feuchten Eck inn are another part of the area’s local history. These are caves or passageways made by people during the medieval settlement period, more than 1,000 years ago. “Salomons Dachboden” is a private local history museum in Bad Zell. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance, as private access arrangements may change.

Planning your trip

Before your trip, the Bad Zell tourist office can help you plan your holiday, find a room and get information about activities in the MĂĽhlviertel holiday region. If you would like to use the office to plan your trip, check its current opening hours in advance.
