Weng im Innkreis is nestled among meadows and gentle hills. There are several ways to explore the area: hiking routes lead through the landscape, while the parish church, chapels and monuments offer insights into local history. You can focus your stay on outdoor activities, culture or a combination of both.
Hiking between Weng and the Moosbach Valley
The Eustachius Loop is 11 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 69 metres. It leads through the Schachawald forest to the Eustachius shrine and back to Weng via Hainschwang.
The Moosbach Valley Loop offers a different route: it follows the stream towards Dietraching and continues to Moosbach. From there, it climbs through the Moosbach Valley to the panoramic viewpoint and returns to Weng im Innkreis. The stream, valley and viewpoint shape the route described.
The two loops can be considered from different perspectives. The Eustachius Loop is described in terms of its length and elevation difference, while the Moosbach Valley Loop focuses on the landscape, from the stream to the panoramic viewpoint. Which details matter most to your planning depends on what you look for when choosing a route.
There is also the Weng–Moosbach hiking and Nordic walking network, established in 2005, with four routes marked with different signs. The Weng Hiking Club’s IVV-FIT Hiking Days take place every year in March. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant year.
Church, chapels and local history
The parish church of St Martin brings together several historical connections. Its organ was built in 1774. Until at least the 15th century, the church served as the parish church for what are now the parishes of Moosbach, Weng and Mining. Its significance therefore reaches back to a time when the ecclesiastical boundaries of the area were different from those of today.
The area’s history is also connected with people born in Weng. Johann Georg Meindl was a Bavarian freedom fighter; he was born and baptised in Weng im Innkreis on 23 April 1682. During the siege of Braunau, he commanded thousands. He served in the uprising as a “Schützenobrist” (chief of the riflemen) and as a “General über ein Regiment Reiter” (general in command of a cavalry regiment). These milestones in his life give a visit to Weng a tangible historical connection.
The municipality’s collection of chapels includes the Pestkapelle (Weng), Elendkapelle (Mankham), Stauberkapelle (Hauserding), Stögerkapelle (Bauerding), Prenningerkapelle (Buch), Hoferkapelle (Riedlham), Stögerkapelle (Elling), Weldlkapelle (Weng), Pieringerkapelle (Pirath), Growaldkapelle (Hunding), Hoferkapelle (Weng), Freitzkapelle (Bergham) and Brandlkapelle (Bergham). The names and associated places show that the chapels are spread across several parts of the municipality. The Ellendkapelle, northwest of Weng, dates back to the time of the plague.
Another monument commemorates Prof. Dr Johann Finsterer (1877–1955), a surgeon born in Weng im Innkreis. The Prof. Hans Finsterer monument also highlights the town’s connection to a figure from the medical field.
Practical planning and finding accommodation
Weng im Innkreis is connected to the Postbus AG public bus network. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date. If you are visiting for the IVV-FIT Hiking Days, it is also worth checking the specific event dates, even though they take place every year in March.
Another experience on offer is a guided tour of the Hargassner factory, which lasts around an hour and includes a headset. The offer also includes Energy World, an interactive biomass exhibition and visitor centre. As programme details may change, check what is planned for your visit in advance.
The information on hiking routes, culture and the tour programme offers different ways to plan your stay, without having to focus on just one type of activity.
