When choosing a destination for your stay, Weiz offers several clear focal points: city history and church art, interactive science, and trails through natural and cultural landscapes. The range extends from Tabor Church, the city’s oldest surviving building, to contemporary exhibitions; the adventure forest and nature trail offer different experiences. You can choose what to explore in Weiz based on which of these perspectives you want to shape your stay.
City History, Industry and Craftsmanship
The Weiz City Museum presents the city’s history and is a key institution in its cultural life. A special feature is the history of the electrical industry in Weiz, adding a specific technical subject to the story of the city.
The Klingenschmiede Museum offers a different way to explore craftsmanship. It is located in the old Mosdorfer factory complex, which dates back to the late 18th century, and provides insights into the art of forging, for which Weiz was known for centuries. Numerous restored models and hands-on stations trace the process from the creation of materials to blade production. This makes not only the finished product, but also the traditional forging process itself a subject of interest.
Art, Architecture and Churches
Kunsthaus Weiz is a venue for art, culture and conferences. Its transparent glass structure blends into the historic fabric of Weiz’s old town. The upper floor contains an event hall, a foyer and exhibition spaces. The exhibitions also add a contemporary touch: the Stadtgalerie at Kunsthaus Weiz and Galerie Weberhaus host exhibitions throughout the year, focusing on contemporary art.
Tabor Church, also known as St. Thomas Church on the Tabor, is the city’s oldest surviving building. It was dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket of Canterbury in 1188. Partially preserved Romanesque and Gothic frescoes depict scenes from the story of Creation, the Passion of Christ and the life of Mary. The church’s name, dedication and imagery each provide their own historical point of reference.
The Baroque basilica on the Weizberg stands at the highest point of the district capital, Weiz. The first church on the Weizberg was built as early as the 11th century. Weizberg Church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in January 2018. The Baroque church building is 53.58 m long, and its interior features frescoes by Josef Adam Ritter von Mölck. The date of the first church and the Baroque design of the church building are two distinct aspects of the Weizberg’s history.
The Spiritual Path is a 3 km pilgrimage route with seven stations, running from Tabor Church in the city centre to the basilica on the Weizberg. Walking time alone is 30 minutes. If you would like to spend time at the stations, allow extra time for this so that the walking time can be distinguished from the time you spend at each stop.
Experiments and Nature Experiences
The funergyLAB offers a different way to explore science. It is an interactive science centre for children and adults. Experiments and experiment kits cover topics such as water, heat, technology, sound, air, electronics, electrostatics and optics. Robotics activities are complemented by a 4D cinema and a black-light room. This brings together a variety of subjects and experiences rather than focusing on just one area of science.
The nature attractions differ considerably in length: the large adventure forest is 1.7 km long, partly left in its natural state, and stretches across Weiz and Mortantsch. Nine learning and activity stations provide information about the forest and its inhabitants. The adventure forest ends at the large playground in Hofbauer Landscape Park (Augsten). By contrast, the Weiz Nature Trail is an easy-to-walk 11.5-kilometre circular route. Information boards bring the flora and fauna of the city of Weiz and its surroundings, as well as a variety of cultural landscapes, to life. The distances make it easy to choose between the shorter adventure forest and the longer circular route.
Hofbauer Landscape Park is a 17-hectare recreational area for residents and visitors to Weiz. An orchard and garden where visitors can pick and enjoy fruit, as well as rest areas for walking and strolling with views of the landscape, complement the trails with places to linger.
