Größing combines a historical connection with hiking trails and winegrowing. Around 50 tumuli have been preserved in the Größinger Tanner; two named trails reach the village along different routes, and the Pachler winery lists Welschriesling, Sämling and Gewürztraminer in its wine selection. The following points of local interest give you specific landmarks to help plan your stay according to your interests.
The Größinger Tanner and local history
Around 50 tumuli have been preserved in the Größinger Tanner as remains of an extensive burial ground. Tumuli are burial mounds; the term draws attention to the type of remains that have been preserved and their connection with a burial ground. This is a group of burial mounds, not a single burial site. For travellers interested in cultural history, the Tanner is a specific archaeological point of reference.
The place name also offers a historical perspective: in 1265, Größing was recorded in documents as Graeczensdorf; the name is interpreted as meaning “fortified village.” The name and the burial ground represent two different aspects of local history: the recorded form of the name, on the one hand, and the preserved tumuli, on the other. Those interested in historical details can thus include both a linguistic interpretation and an archaeological landmark in their exploration.
Two hiking trails, different local landmarks
A hiking report dated 16 December 2023 describes the “TAU – Way of the Vineyards”: after crossing the Fruttnerbach, the trail continues to Größing. The TAU Trail also passes the “Steintal-Alpaka” snack station or shop. The stream crossing and the continuation to Größing describe this section; Steintal-Alpaka is another named point along the trail.
The “Backbone: St. Anna-Tieschen - On the tracks of volcanoes” hiking trail reaches Größing via Rosenberg and runs through the village to the Größinger Tanner at its edge. The named local landmarks along the two trails therefore differ: the TAU Trail focuses on the Fruttnerbach and the onward route to Größing, while the Backbone features Rosenberg and the Tanner. If you choose a trail based on a particular local landmark, you can use these different sequences to guide you.
Pachler winegrowing
The wine selection at the Pachler winery includes Welschriesling, Sämling and Gewürztraminer. Around 4 hectares of vineyards are cultivated; most of the vineyard sites are in the immediate vicinity of the farm. The three grape varieties name the selection, while the area figure and location of the vineyard sites describe the scale and their proximity to the farm. Pachler winegrowing thus adds another dimension to the local history and hiking trails. During your stay, you can choose between an archaeological focus, the routes described and the subject of winegrowing.
