In Preggraben, the hikes described can be distinguished by their hut destination, summit and other route details. One important point for navigation: Vorderleitenhütte and Obere Hinterleitenhütte are both at 1,578 m, but they are different destinations with different approach directions. Wildeggkogel also features in several tour variations.

Hut, summit and other waypoints

A hike from the Almgasthof Spitzer in Preggraben leads to Vorderleitenhütte. The ascent is relatively steep, direct and heads southeast. Regional snacks are served at the hut, which is at 1,578 m. From there, you can climb Wildeggkogel, at 1,792 m. You can treat the hut visit as a destination in its own right, or include the summit as another option when choosing your route. If regional snacks are the focus, Vorderleitenhütte is the specific destination; you can plan to climb the summit from there.

The route “GH Spitzer–Vorderleitenhütte–Speikkogel” follows a different course from the hike to the hut alone: it passes through Türkentörl at 1,863 m and reaches Lenzmoarkogel at 1,991 m. These landmarks help identify this tour by its sequence of waypoints, rather than simply by Vorderleitenhütte or a summit. Another tour to Wildeggkogel starts at a small car park in Preggraben and leads to the summit via Untere and Obere Vorderleitenhütte. An Alpine Club report dated 28 July 2019 also describes a short detour to Wildeggkogel during a hike from Preggraben. When comparing the tours, consider both their starting points and named waypoints.

Getting there and starting points

For the route “GH Spitzer–Vorderleitenhütte–Speikkogel,” the approach is described as driving or taking a taxi from Sankt Lorenzen bei Knittelfeld via Preg and Preggraben to Almgasthof Spitzer. Another approach leads from Kraubath into Preggraben and continues along a toll road to Obere Hinterleitenhütte at 1,578 m. The fact that Vorderleitenhütte is listed at the same elevation should not obscure that these are different huts. When planning your approach, therefore, follow the full destination name and the route described for it: access via Almgasthof Spitzer and the approach to Obere Hinterleitenhütte are different directions.

The tour starting at the car park in Preggraben

The tour “221213 Wildeggkogel 1792m” starts at a small car park in Preggraben and leads to Wildeggkogel via Untere Vorderleitenhütte and Obere Vorderleitenhütte. It is classified as a winter route; snow conditions may vary. Take this into account when planning, and check current snow conditions and whether the car park is accessible before setting out, as parking conditions can change. It is also advisable to check current accessibility when using the toll road.
