Mühlen lies on the sunny side of the Zirbitzkogel, in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park and the Murau district. The town is at the foot of the 2,396-metre-high mountain. Nature, local history and activities each offer a different focus. During your stay, you can choose between observing nature, exploring historical themes and getting active.

Natural Surroundings of Mühlen

Located between Mühlen and Hüttenberg, the Hörfeld Moor is a nature reserve and a wetland of international importance. It is home to 500 different species of butterflies and moths, as well as 125 bird species. A hiking trail leads around the moor, making the landscape a destination in its own right for a hike. The Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park offers more than the mountain and its setting at the foot of the Zirbitzkogel: it also features a protected wetland with diverse wildlife.

Archaeology, Local History and Craftsmanship

The Noreia Celtic Museum displays a bronze sword from the Urnfield period. It also explains that excavations brought an entire town complex to light. Another historical landmark is the branch church of St. James on Jakobsberg above Mühlen, first mentioned in 1316. Local history is also linked to the use of water power and the construction of mills.

The Mühlen Farming Museum vividly presents rural ways of life, work and culture. It offers insights into working practices and the tools used, up to the 20th century. The museum’s demonstration forge introduces visitors to the traditional craft of blacksmithing. At the Noreia Historical Experience Forge, visitors can work glowing raw iron over an open forge fire using historical tools and take home a personal holiday souvenir. Dates for these activities may vary. Together, they offer different ways to explore the past: archaeological finds, everyday rural culture and a hands-on craft activity.

Trails and Leisure Activities

The clear waters of Lake Mühlen are suitable for swimming and fishing; fishing may be seasonal. A discovery trail with several stations runs around the lake. For those who prefer a route with individual stops, the Hans in Luck hiking adventure offers a different focus: this family hiking trail has seven stations.

At the Tonnerhütte, the marble run features four wooden tracks made from local larch, with a total length of more than 70 metres. It is described as an alpine experience for explorers aged 3 to 99. Godi’s archery course offers a different setting: it is about 6 km long and currently has more than 80 figures set up along the course. The activities differ in format—from stops along a hiking trail to wooden tracks and a course with figures. To choose, consider which of these activities would best complement your stay.
