The Zinkgraben, trails for hiking, running and cycling, and traces of local history offer different ways to explore Weißenbach an der Enns. When planning, it helps to distinguish between a weather-dependent trail, a 10-kilometre running route, an unmarked cycling tour and cultural stops. This lets you decide in advance which activity should be the main focus and what information is important before setting out on each one.
Nature in the Zinkgraben
The Zinkgraben offers nature experiences in a gorge forest along the Großer Billbach. Geologically interesting features include conglomerate outcrops and landslides. The forest, stream and geological formations offer different perspectives on the area: the gorge forest shapes the landscape, while the outcrops and landslides reveal its geological character. Weather permitting, the Auszeitsteig trail in the Zinkgraben can be walked year-round. So take the weather and trail conditions into account when planning, rather than relying on the season alone.
An exploratory tour of the Zinkgraben can begin in the district of Weißenbach an der Enns at the Eisenwurzenhalle. For the “Natur auf der Spur” nature rally, the information board near the Eisenwurzenhalle is a possible starting point. These are two specific ways to explore the natural area: an exploratory tour and a nature rally with its own starting point.
Routes and starting points
The Eisenwurzenweg 08 trail begins in Weißenbach an der Enns in the Eisenwurzen Nature Park. The Milchstraßenrunde is designed for runners: it is 10 kilometres long, leads through the Zinkgraben uphill to Weißenbach and then returns to Sankt Gallen via the Milchstraße. The two options therefore differ by activity: one is a hiking trail that starts here, while the other is a running route with a specified length and described course.
The Bussi-Baba-Tour is a gravel and mountain biking tour and is not signposted; follow the GPX track. Check the track and route conditions before setting out. Along the tour, you can catch your first views of the Buchstein, whose summit is 2,224 metres high. The Buchsteinrunde, by contrast, begins in Sankt Gallen, first leads to Weißenbach an der Enns and then continues via Wolfsbachau to Pflegeralm and Erbsattel.
Local history and other stops
The Weißenbach an der Enns Workers’ Music Association was founded in 1890. A different period is represented by the former granary at Weißenbach an der Enns 57: it dates from the 17th century and is listed in the monument protection ordinance for the political district of Liezen. The two facts highlight different periods: the founding of an association in the 19th century and a historic building from the 17th century that is listed in the district ordinance.
The climbing wall is located in Weißenbach an der Enns, past the turn-off to the railway station. If you plan to visit, check the current local conditions of use beforehand.
