At 4.22 km², Grundlsee is the largest lake in Styria. At the same time, a large part of the municipality is under the strictest nature protection. The area figure refers to the lake, while the protection status applies to a large part of the municipality; the landscape therefore extends beyond the lake itself. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish excursions by their character. A route across several lakes, a trail along the southern shore, historic paths and buildings, and a local tradition each offer a different focus. This lets you decide whether you want to focus on the landscape, a particular route or local history.
The lake and trails as different excursions
The 3-Lake Tour begins with a boat ride across Grundlsee, continues on foot to Toplitzsee and ends with a traditional flatboat ride to Kammersee. If you are planning this tour, check the current boat departure times. The Geotrail Grundlsee starts at the western edge of the village of Grundlsee and follows the hiking trail along the southern shore. The two excursions differ in their itinerary: the 3-Lake Tour links several lakes in stages, while the Geotrail follows the southern-shore hiking trail.
The history of paths and architecture
The Rebenburg Promenade on the right bank of the Grundlseer Traun opened in 1882. The parish church of Grundlsee in Styria was built between 1888 and 1890 in the Neo-Gothic style. The promenade therefore opened six years before construction of the church began. Neo-Gothic refers to a later revival of Gothic design elements; the style designation adds an architectural point of reference to the construction dates. Here, a specific history of a path meets a church with a defined construction period and architectural style.
Local tradition and planning your visit
In Gößl on Grundlsee, a village judge is still elected every year from among the village farmers. This custom complements the datable history of buildings and paths with a local tradition that recurs annually. The Kaiserlicher Stall is open only for events, vernissages and exhibitions. If you would like to visit, plan your visit around one of these occasions and check whether a suitable date is scheduled. The election takes place every year, whereas visits to the Kaiserlicher Stall are limited to the occasions listed.
Walking trails and winter conditions
The Ranftlmühle is near Toplitzsee and can be reached on foot from Gößl. Trail conditions can vary in winter. If you are planning to walk to the mill during this season, check conditions in advance.
When weather conditions are suitable, the Zloam tennis court becomes a 1,600 m² natural ice rink. This is a weather-dependent option to consider when planning your trip. During a winter stay, there are therefore two different conditions to keep in mind: trail conditions around the Ranftlmühle can vary, while the natural ice rink is available only when the weather is suitable.
