Wine Road and Landscape
Zieregg can be explored through two concrete points of reference: the South Styrian Wine Road and local spots with views of the wine-growing landscape. The road is around 25 kilometres long, runs from Ehrenhausen to Leutschach an der Weinstraße, and is considered Austria’s oldest wine road. It passes through the Zieregg area. Its endpoints indicate the route’s regional scale; the viewpoints on site offer a closer look at individual landscapes. This makes it possible to distinguish the Wine Road as an overarching route from the local viewpoints.
The Tement winery is nestled in Zieregg and offers impressive views of the vineyards of South Styria and neighbouring Slovenia. The Wirtshaus am Zieregg is also set among the gentle hills of South Styria and offers impressive views across the surrounding vineyards. These provide two clearly distinct views: a regional vista reaching into the neighbouring country and views of the vineyards around the inn. For travellers interested in landscapes and winegrowing, these are concrete, different perspectives on Zieregg.
Activities and Regional Cuisine
E-bike riding is popular on the South Styrian Wine Road. Another activity-related detail concerns the Berghausen Circular Hiking Trail No. 1: it ran from the former municipal office in Berghausen towards Zieregg. The two details differ in scale and type of activity: e-bike riding is associated with the regional Wine Road, while the hiking trail is identified by a starting point and a direction. When planning, you can keep these different points of reference in mind if you are interested in a particular activity.
The Wirtshaus am Zieregg is run by the Tement family winery and combines regional cuisine with a carefully selected wine culture. One specific dish on offer is crispy fried chicken, available to preorder and take away. Regional cuisine and wine culture provide the culinary setting; the fried chicken adds a named dish with a takeaway option. So, in addition to the general focus on regional cuisine, there is a specific meal option to consider when planning your trip.
Another culinary point of interest is the production of a product in the Zieregg vineyard: Felix Weinstock produces barrel-aged balsamic vinegar there, among other things, together with his son Vasco. The location, named producer and barrel ageing give this detail its own distinct character alongside the inn’s cuisine. Zieregg’s culinary offerings therefore include both a dining venue and a specific product.
A Distinctive Local Landmark
The Zieregg Carmelite Chapel is directly adjacent to the Wirtshaus am Zieregg, the Magnothek. The chapel and the inn are therefore located right next to each other, even though they represent different themes. When looking for a holiday apartment in Zieregg, it helps to keep your preferred focus for the stay in mind: landscape, activities or regional cuisine. The views described, the different activity options and the culinary offerings provide concrete points of reference.
