For your trip planning, the locations are key: Bärenhof Berghausen is in the municipality of Berghausen; the parish church, mausoleum and start of Circular Hiking Trail No. 4 are in Ehrenhausen. This allows you to explore the animal welfare project, historic architecture and hike as separate highlights.

Church and Mausoleum in Ehrenhausen

Ehrenhausen Parish Church is in the historic town centre, directly on the market square, and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was originally built as a Romanesque church in the 13th century, extended several times and given a Baroque style in the 18th century. Its architectural history therefore spans several periods and includes a number of structural changes.

The church’s significant works of art include a Baroque high altar, side altars and historic tombs of local noble families. The Eggenberg Mausoleum stands on an artificial terrace on the Schlossberg above the town. Commissioned by Ruprecht von Eggenberg, it was built from 1609 as a tomb for him and his family and is considered an important example of Mannerist architecture in Austria. The church and mausoleum offer different perspectives: the parish church on the market square, and the family tomb on the terrace above the town.

Circular Hiking Trail No. 4 and Traussner Mill

Ehrenhausen Circular Hiking Trail No. 4 starts right in the town centre. From Neuer Markt or the car park, it first heads towards the South Styrian Wine Road or Berghausen. A few metres outside the town centre, the trail turns left towards LOISIUM Wine & Spa Resort Südsteiermark.

The circular route follows forest and meadow paths to Traussner Mill, then returns to Ehrenhausen along the Mur River. This way, the walk combines a specific destination with a riverside return route. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

At Traussner Mill, the Erlebnis Mühlerei invites visitors on a journey through the history of mills. In the 3D cinema, the journey from grain to bread is shown in three dimensions; the visit ends with a bread tasting. If you would like to visit the Mühlerei, check current visitor information in advance.

South Styrian Wine Road and landscape

As a regional highlight, the South Styrian Wine Road begins in Ehrenhausen and runs to Leutschach an der Weinstraße. It is around 25 kilometres long. The South Styrian landscape is characterised by cultivated vineyards, forests and flower fields. This regional perspective complements the specific architectural and hiking destinations in Ehrenhausen with a look at the landscape of southern Styria.

Bärenhof Berghausen

In the municipality of Berghausen, Bärenhof Berghausen is a long-standing animal welfare project on the South Styrian Wine Road. It provides brown bears from Europe and Asia with a species-appropriate home. As a distinct highlight, the project differs from the historic buildings and circular trail: animal welfare is the focus here.
