Johann Joseph Fux, a Baroque composer and court conductor, was born in Langegg, a district of the municipality of Nestelbach bei Graz. A memorial plaque and a mosaic in Hirtenfeld commemorate him. The plaque was installed in 1904 at what was thought to be his birthplace; in 1960, August Reidl created the mosaic on the wayside shrine, depicting Fux’s life and career.

Fux, Memorial Sites and Church Art

The parish church of St James the Elder is visible from the motorway. Its high altar is a tall column altar dating from the first half of the 18th century and is attributed to the Graz sculptor Johann Jakob Schoy. Alongside the memorial sites dedicated to Fux, Nestelbach also offers a glimpse into specific details of church art history.
