Unterlamm combines hikes through gentle rolling hills with specific cultural and nature themes. Trails around the village pass through vineyards, orchards and mixed forests. For orientation, the central hiking trailhead is at the information point in the village centre, where hiking maps are available. Also nearby are a large public car park at the youth centre, a public toilet and a drinking fountain.

Hiking trails and their themes

The three ERLebenspfade in Unterlamm, Oberlamm and Magland were created in 2022 and all start in the village centre of Unterlamm. Along the trails, the cultural landscape and biodiversity of the three villages are presented across twelve experience areas. This makes it possible to enjoy a walk while learning about the region’s landscape and nature.

A separate circular trail is dedicated to Saint Bernadette: the Way of Saint Bernadette starts at the parish church of St Henry and is just under two kilometres long. Its focus is on the 18 messages of Our Lady of Lourdes and the life of Saint Bernadette. This religious and biographical focus sets it apart from the presentation of the cultural landscape and biodiversity along the ERLebenspfade.

There is also a specific local connection for cyclists: the Thermenradweg R 12 runs through Unterlamm. If you would like to plan your trip around a route, you can consider it as a cycling option alongside the hiking trails described here.

Cultural sites and regular events

The parish church of St Henry was built between 1907 and 1910 in the Historicist style. In 2006, the Lourdes Grotto of the Virgin Mary was created on a slope behind the church. A Mass with a candlelight procession is held at the grotto on the 11th of each month at 7:00 pm.

Heinrichsonntag is celebrated every year in honour of Unterlamm’s patron saint with a large folk festival and parish fair. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with a service or this festival, check the relevant date in advance. Advance booking by phone is required for visits and guided tours of the Friedl family’s Josefskapelle: +43 3155 8492.

At the Lebensart studio of Fritz and Tanja Marko, visitors can see paintings, sculptures, mobiles, garden objects made from natural materials and ceramics. These arts and crafts and design works complement the religious and landscape themes of the trails, while offering a different kind of visitor experience.

Nature and local dining

A protected black poplar grows in the district of Oberlamm. It is about 300 years old and has a circumference of 9.40 metres. Its approximate age and precise measurement make it a nature attraction in its own right, alongside the hiking and cultural offerings.

Fishing is permitted at the middle pond of the natural pond complex. As fishing conditions may change, check them before your visit. The Die Speisemanufaktur restaurant welcomes visitors from outside the area seven days a week by prior reservation. If you plan to dine there, book in advance.

What to consider when planning

The offerings differ in theme and scheduling: the hiking trails have landscape and religious themes, while services and Heinrichsonntag take place on specific dates. A visit to Josefskapelle requires advance booking by phone, and the restaurant requires a reservation. If you would like to combine several of these interests, take these requirements into account when planning your stay in Unterlamm.
