Rock formations, mills and old paths offer a range of ways to discover Trog. At Sporiroaofen, striking rocks and sweeping views take centre stage; a mill, a Madonna and historic connections add cultural and historical path-related dimensions to the natural attractions.
Rock formations and hiking trails
At Sporiroaofen, the ascent leads to striking rock formations and sweeping views. The Sporiroaofen circular hike begins at the car park in Bad Sauerbrunn in Trog and returns to the starting point via trail no. 10 (Mausegg). The hike therefore starts and ends at the same car park, with the return route following a specifically named trail.
Mannagettaofen offers a different highlight: this rock spire, formed from horizontally layered slab gneiss, is about 10 m high and lies at an elevation of 685 m. The 10 m refers to the height of the rock spire, while 685 m is its elevation. The natural attractions are therefore distinct: Sporiroaofen is about the ascent, rock formations and views, while Mannagettaofen is a single formation described in geological terms.
At Stainz, on plot no. 382/3 in the cadastral municipality of Trog, there is a dripstone cave that is protected under the Styrian Natural Caves Act. The cave adds the aspect of legal protection to the rock attractions.
Mills, a Madonna and historic paths
The old Sporimühle stands by the Falleggbach stream. Its waterwheel is sometimes in operation; on the Klugbauer–Hahnhofhütte circular trail no. 61, the mill is a photo opportunity. If you would like to see the waterwheel in operation, check its current status before your visit.
The Spori-Baum Madonna depicts the Virgin Mary and Child in a niche carved into a larch trunk. The monument, created in 2018, was made by Ernst Kohlbacher in gratitude for the recovery of two friends after a serious accident. If you are interested in local commemorative culture, the Madonna offers not only a religious image but also a specific personal story behind its creation.
The very old pack trail to Sauerbrunn has a section cut directly into the rock. Historically, Wessenstein Castle Ruins guarded a road from Stainz via Aiblwirt to Pack, one of the routes across the Koralpe. The two stories of these routes highlight different aspects: the section carved into the rock on the pack trail, and the historical importance of a road across the Koralpe at Wessenstein.
The different highlights can help you decide: the Sporiroaofen circular hike leads to rock formations and views, while the Klugbauer–Hahnhofhütte circular trail no. 61 includes the Sporimühle as a photo opportunity. You can choose your route according to whether you are more interested in landscapes and rock formations or a mill.
