A late Baroque high altar painting from 1745 and a cultural center with a varied events program give Sankt Martin im Sulmtal a distinctive cultural character. The area also offers legends and themed trails, cycling and regional culinary experiences. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding what matters most to you: are you especially interested in art and local history, archaeological traces or regional products?

Art, culture and local history

The Greith-Haus hosts exhibitions, concerts and readings, as well as film screenings and theater performances. The program changes over time. If you want to attend a particular event, check the dates for your travel period. The venue has space for 400 visitors.

The parish church of Sankt Martin im Sulmtal is a simple Baroque building; only a few remnants of the Gothic church remain. At the center of the late Baroque high altar hangs a painting of Saint Martin by Carl Laubmann, dating from 1745. Here you can distinguish several historical layers: the Baroque building, the surviving Gothic traces and the late Baroque altar furnishings.

The Legends Trail connects stories with the places where they originated and with local history. For those interested in traditional tales, this offers a different way to explore the past than looking at architecture or a single work of art: stories and their connection to place are the common thread.

Archaeology, trail design and cycling

Archaeological sites are located along Archaeological Trail 1. The still-visible ramparts of a former fortification have also been preserved on a hill. How clearly they can be seen may depend on vegetation and current conditions.

Along Archaeological Trail 2, archaeological sites lie between the villages amid an attractive landscape of woods and meadows. The trail thus combines archaeological themes with woodland and meadow scenery. When planning, you can decide whether to focus mainly on historical traces or also on the character of the landscape.

The Greith Trails showcase a different approach to trail design. The wayfinding system designed by Anne and Peter Knoll guides visitors along the right “Greith path.” Stone benches and “landscape sofas” made from Röthelstein boulders of various sizes provide places to linger; the stones are connected like bridges with wooden planks. The focus here is on wayfinding and thoughtfully designed seating.

The Sulmtal Cycling Route runs through the municipality of Sankt Martin im Sulmtal. If you plan to ride this route, check the trail conditions and signage in advance; both may change.
