Vorderglemm can be explored on foot along very different routes: the S03 Saalach Promenade is a leisurely, flat winter hike along the stream; the SH 32 Vorderglemm Alpine Pasture Loop climbs uphill from asphalt to gravel. The season and surface alone provide concrete clues for choosing the day’s plans.

Hiking: along the stream or uphill into the alpine pasture region

The S03 Saalach Promenade runs for about 4 km alongside the stream to Jausern in Vorderglemm. It is a flat, leisurely winter hike. On the S01 Sonnseit Promenade hike, you can take the bus back to Saalbach from Jausern; check the timetable for your visit, as bus details may change seasonally.

The SH 32 Vorderglemm Alpine Pasture Loop starts near the Schattberg X-Press and follows the Glemmtal cycle path to Jausern. It initially runs on asphalt, then climbs uphill on gravel into the alpine pasture region. Along the way, the loop passes the Schönleitenbahn mid-station. As you gain elevation, impressive views open up down into the Vorderglemm valley. The route runs at 1,700 m just below its highest point—so this is not the loop’s highest point.

The route shape can also be factored into your plans: on the SH 32 descent, the path winds down to the valley floor in numerous switchbacks via Thurneralm and Bergeralm. The S01 Sonnseit Promenade hike, by contrast, is a circular route. It crosses the bridge near the Schönleitenbahn and, after a descent to the main road, continues to Jausern. The J01 Jauser Alm route climbs uphill to the alpine pasture and then follows the same path back to the starting point. The routes on offer therefore differ not only in surface and season, but also in whether they form a loop or return along the same path.

Optional detours to Wildenkarkogel and Schönleitenhütte are also possible on the SH 32. Schönleitenhütte is open seasonally; the detour also provides a link to Saalfelden Leogang’s mountain biking network. Plan for this option with your travel dates and current conditions in mind.

Trails and seasonal information

The trail descriptions also show how the routes differ in character. The Wildenkaramba Line is natural and has an original surface, roots, small stones, and tight turns. At Schönleiten, the ScheeLeitn Line features shaped berms, rollers, and jumps, allowing for a rhythmic trail flow. Trail conditions and configurations may change; check the latest information before your visit.

The Schönleitenbahn I+II has a travel distance of 2,767 m and an elevation gain of 968 m. Its operating hours are seasonal, so it’s worth checking the times for your travel period. There is an outdoor car park at the Schönleitenbahn valley station. As parking rules and hours may change, check them before setting off.

Regional history and choosing accommodation

The region’s history includes a transformation that extends beyond Vorderglemm: Saalbach, including Vorderglemm and Hinterglemm, was historically a poor farming community before skiing brought about economic change. The ski area is also associated with the Pinzgau Grass Mountains in the wider region. This context complements the specific routes and trails with a look at how the region has developed.

If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Vorderglemm, your travel dates and planned activities can guide your choice. For route planning, there are clear differences to consider: a winter hike along the stream, an uphill alpine pasture loop, or a circular route or out-and-back walk. Tailor your plans to the season, and check the latest information for bus travel from Jausern, as well as for the cable car and car park.
