For planning your visit to Paßthurn, the Moor-Erlebnisweg (Moor Experience Trail) at Pass Thurn offers a specific viewpoint: from the Pass Thurn–Tauernblick starting point, a 150 m walk takes you to a pavilion with an observation platform and views of the Hohe Tauern. The trail to Wasenmoos starts at the car park and bus stop by the Gasthof Tauernblick. This gives you a named starting point and a specific viewpoint to help you find your way. An older travel guide also describes a ski bus route from Mittersill via Pass Thurn to Kitzbühel. It serves the middle station of the Panoramabahn and the valley station of the Resterhöhe chairlift; check the current route and timetable before travelling.
Wasenmoos: Plants and History
Sundews, butterworts and bladderworts grow in Wasenmoos; all three are carnivorous plants native to Austria. Together, they offer a clear point of interest for travellers who are interested in plant life as well as the views.
The history of how Wasenmoos was used leads to a different topic from plants and views. From 1781 to 1819, peat was extracted there as fuel for the copper vitriol works in Kronau. The historic Waasenmoosweg was about six kilometres long; pack animals were used to transport the peat along it to Mühlbach. The period of extraction, use as fuel and transport route thus come together in a specific account of how the area was used at the time.
The two distances refer to different scales: 150 m is the distance from the starting point to the pavilion, while about six kilometres is the length of the historic Waasenmoosweg. This distinction helps you avoid confusing the short walk to the viewpoint with the historic transport route when planning.
Views and Orientation
At the Nationalpark-Panorama Resterhöhe, a Smart Viewer in a small exhibition serves as an orientation aid and provides additional information about the protected area. From there, you can see most of the mountain peaks and the national park’s largely unspoilt high-alpine landscape. This brings information about the protected area together with views of the landscape. Check seasonal opening dates before visiting.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
Stage 06 of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail follows Trail No. 77, “Hochmoorrunde” (Raised Bog Loop), through the Wasenmoos raised bog. The stage number identifies its place on the Panorama Trail; Trail No. 77 names the raised-bog loop. A mountain-bike tour runs from Mittersill along the old Paß-Straße, past Mittersiller Sonnberg, towards Paß Thurn. Before Gasthof Breitmoos, it branches onto a high-level trail towards Mühlbach. The two route descriptions provide different kinds of orientation: the hiking route is identified by its stage, trail number and raised bog, while the cycling route is described by the sequence of named places and sections of trail.
