The “Gföller Mahder 1” route passes the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and the Muckklause on the way to the Gföller Mahder meadows. Other trails cross a boggy valley floor or lead to the Wildschütz inn; musical and architectural history add to the destinations along the way. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Gföll, you can first decide whether trails, moorland or cultural history should shape your stay.

Hiking trails with their own destinations

The “Gföller Mahder 1” hiking route leads from the Hintergföll inn via the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and the Muckklause to the Gföller Mahder meadows. A hiking trail also starts near the disused marble quarry at Hintergföll. It leads to the “Moarlack” and the “Gasthaus Hintergföll”, a little further downhill. Another trail leads to the Wildschütz inn in the Gföll district; it is listed as 30 minutes and 1.5 kilometres.

From the “Moarlack”, the hike leads to the “Alpenwirtschaft Heutal”; the return to the car follows the level Mäanderweg trail through the high moor. Parking is permitted at the “Talbruck”. Without a stop at an inn, this hike takes about two hours. The Mäanderweg trail runs between Moosrem and the “Alpengasthof Heutal” across the boggy valley floor.

A mountain biking route is also described: the well-maintained trail, with excellent views, starts in the valley at Unken, climbs via Sonnberg into Heutal and continues to the Wildalm. Conditions may vary; check them before setting out. From the Georg Flatscher ski school, you can go directly onto a 30-kilometre cross-country ski trail.

The time estimates refer to different trails: the 30 minutes and 1.5 kilometres apply to the trail to the Wildschütz inn. The hike from the “Moarlack” via the “Alpenwirtschaft Heutal” and the Mäanderweg trail back to the car is listed as taking about two hours without a stop at an inn. This makes it possible to consider each time frame separately when planning your day.

Musical and architectural history

The “Gföller Musi” was officially founded in 1924. Traditionally, the musicians learned by ear and played all the pieces from memory; family ties were also part of this tradition. Both the year it was founded and the way the music was learned and played have shaped Gföll’s musical history.

The Muckklause is a stone-and-wood structure renovated in 1975. It lies on the “Gföller Mahder 1” route between the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and the Gföller Mahder meadows. This route brings together named natural and built landmarks as well as the history of timber rafting.

The former Gföll forester’s house, formerly known as Rauschgütl, is also part of the area’s history. In the mid-19th century, Nikolaus Rainer sold it, together with 6 Joch and 980 square Klafters of land measured according to Austrian standards, to the Royal Bavarian Saltworks Administration. The building is privately inhabited today.
