A roughly one-hour loop around Schlierersee, a trail with five mill stops and a 2,711-metre-high summit offer some concrete highlights of Zederhaus. Riedingtal Nature Park lies in the municipality of Zederhaus, in the state of Salzburg, on the southern edge of the Niedere Tauern range. Weißeck is the nature park’s highest peak. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the mountain scenery, hiking trails and local cultural themes.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Central Alpine Long-Distance Hiking Trail No. 702 crosses the nature park along the northern side of the valley, above the road. The “Power of Still Waters” themed trail links the Niedere Tauern with the Hohe Tauern, creating another thematic connection between the two mountain ranges.

Two circular trails can be compared by duration and theme. The circular trail around Schlierersee starts at the nature park visitor centre, passes Hubertus Chapel and takes about an hour. The Mill Trail starts in the village of Zederhaus, is an approximately 1.5-hour circular hike and includes five stops about mills. Another route leads from Schliereralm around the Rieding reservoir and along its south-western shore, passing Hubertus Chapel.

Experience nature along the way

The Zederhaus Forest Nature Trail covers the region’s plants, insects and birds, as well as forest landscapes and ways of using wood. Nature park guides share their expert knowledge with children and adults about local wildlife and plant life, old alpine-pasture traditions and geological features. The nature trail focuses on specific forest-related topics, while guided tours offer a broader range of knowledge about nature and culture.

Cycling and mountain biking routes also pass through the mountain scenery of the Riedingtal, by lakes and alpine huts. The staffed alpine huts serve regional delicacies, fresh alpine milk and homemade cheese. There are nine staffed huts in the nature park, including six certified Almsommer huts. The number of certified huts may change if classifications are revised.

Mills and Lungau culture

Four of the nine former mills in the valley have been renovated and now house the “Mill Life” exhibition. The Mill Trail explores the theme of milling at its five stops and combines it with a circular hike starting in the village of Zederhaus.

The “Maurergut” heritage farm in Zederhaus is a typical Lungau single-farmstead whose origins date back to the late Middle Ages. The Zederhaus Prangstangen are also distinctive cultural artefacts: the wooden poles are wrapped in thousands of alpine and meadow flowers and can reach up to 8 metres in height.

The Hubertus Mass is held every year at the end of September in Hubertus Chapel in Zederhaus. If the date matters for your travel plans, check it before you arrive.

Summer planning

During the main summer holiday season, a Tälerbus valley shuttle operates in Riedingtal Nature Park. Guests can use it to return after hikes to the alpine huts. Check the operating days before your trip if you plan to take the bus.
