St. Martin combines local history with a circular hike that returns to Sankt Martin. The Gothic cemetery chapel, historic houses and the trail at Speiereck offer different starting points for a stay. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether your main interest is architectural history, hiking or both. This lets you choose the location based on the things you are interested in during your holiday.

Chapels and churches

The Gothic cemetery chapel in Sankt Martin is also known as the Anna or Rochus Chapel. Originally, it was a two-storey charnel house, or ossuary, with an octagonal floor plan. Its function and design offer different insights: the charnel house reflects its original use as an ossuary, while the octagonal floor plan and two storeys show the building’s form. During a restoration, the chapel was brought closer to its late-medieval design, and its unity with the parish church was emphasised. Another religious site is the branch church of St. Martin. It is located in the St. Martin district of Lungau.

Historic houses and protected monuments

The history of the Heihsgut dates back to 1478. That year, the Carinthian Heihs family acquired the house from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht. The Heihsgut includes a Swiss pine parlour dating from 1545. The dates refer to different things: 1478 to the acquisition of the house, and 1545 to the parlour. The Heihsgut is a protected monument and has been designated a cultural monument. As of 30 June 2025, the Ansitz Heiss-Haus at St. Martiner-Straße 1 and the Schüttkasten, also known as the Mentenwirts-Kasten, at St. Martiner-Straße 7 are also protected monuments in Sankt Martin. Here, the history of a house, a dated architectural detail and other buildings identified by name come together.

Circular hike at Speiereck

The circular hike “At the foot of Speiereck” leads to the Church of St. Egid, which is over 800 years old. It then follows the southern side of Speiereck into Sonndörfl and back to Sankt Martin. The route thus combines a historic destination with a clearly specified sequence of trail sections. Unlike the chapels and houses, whose architectural history is the main focus, the circular hike offers a dedicated hiking option with a return to Sankt Martin.

Plan your journey

Sankt Martin can be reached via the toll road Tauern Autobahn A10. The route takes you via the St. Michael exit, onward to Tamsweg and through St. Michael to the St. Martin exit. This provides a specific route to follow; also take the A10 toll into account when planning your journey. Check road conditions before setting off. When planning your time in the area, you are therefore considering two different questions: how to get to the village and whether to focus on architectural history or the circular hike.
