Göriach lies at an altitude of 1,220 metres and is surrounded by the Radstadt Tauern mountains. The Göriach mountain hut village, winter activities and alpine events offer different reasons to visit. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between activities and event dates: trails shape your daily itinerary, while the alpine mass and Bauernherbst festival have specific dates on the calendar. At the start of a tour, there is a waterfall in the Göriachbach stream.

Hiking to the mountain hut village

The Göriach mountain hut village is a small alpine hamlet in the upper part of the valley, at around 1,200 metres. The hike from Hintergöriach to the mountain hut village and Hansalhütte takes about an hour; walking time may vary depending on conditions. From the last turning area, it is a five-minute walk to the mountain hut village. This access route is suitable for families with pushchairs and older visitors. This gives you different time frames to consider when planning your day: an approximately one-hour hike to Hansalhütte and the short walk from the turning area to the mountain hut village.

Hiking and winter activities

Göriach is a starting point for hikes in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau and the Carinthian Nock Mountains. In winter, a winter hiking trail follows the Göriachbach stream through a snow-covered landscape. The winter activities also include idyllic winter hiking trails and groomed cross-country ski trails; tobogganing is one of the winter experiences for the whole family. The options differ in terms of activity: you can walk on winter trails, use the cross-country ski trails or go tobogganing. Göriach is part of the “Mountaineering Villages” initiative, which promotes a mindful, unhurried and authentic experience of nature.

Alpine traditions and farmhouse cheese

The traditional alpine mass in the Göriach mountain hut village is held on the last Sunday in July every year. The “Bauernherbst Festival” in Göriach takes place on the last Saturday in September and includes the traditional descent of the sheep from the alpine pastures. These offer two different reasons to visit: an event in July in the mountain hut village and one in September in Göriach. If you are planning your trip around either event, check the exact calendar date for your chosen year.

The Hiasnhof farm, run by the Naynar family in Fern, sells goat’s and cow’s cheese. Purchases and orders are possible by appointment. If you would like to buy or order cheese, be sure to arrange an appointment in advance.

Getting there and planning your trip

First, choose your travel dates and main focus so you can plan your accommodation search and activities together.

You can travel by bus to the “Göriach Parkplatz Hüttendorf” stop; by car, you can drive to the turning area just before the mountain hut village. If travelling by bus, it is a good idea to check the timetable for your travel day.
