A rectangular market square dating from the 13th century, a Gothic parish church and the Tauern Cycle Path, which runs directly through the town, give Sankt Veit im Pongau a range of distinctive landmarks. Other attractions include a Bronze Age settlement, the Seelacken Museum in the spa gardens and Maria im Paradies Monastery. Together, they offer everything from local history and monastic life to cycling and hiking.

Set above the Salzach Valley

Sankt Veit im Pongau lies on a mid-mountain terrace above the Salzach Valley, at an altitude of 763 metres. The rectangular market square was laid out according to plan in the 13th century. Its geometric shape is a striking feature of the historic townscape and offers a direct comparison with the architecture of the parish church.

Townscape, church and early history

The parish church of Saint Vitus is a four-aisled Gothic basilica dating from around 1400. Its four aisles give the church building its structure, offering a different form of historic design alongside the planned market square. A settlement already existed on Klinglberg in the Early Bronze Age, from 2000 to 1500 BC, in connection with the copper ore mining carried out in the area. This early settlement dates back much further than the market square and church.

The Seelacken Museum complex is located in the spa gardens and comprises the Wallner farmhouse, the Seelacken mill, a granary, a farmhouse garden and a bee observation hive. The collection ranges from farm buildings to gardens and beekeeping. The museum thus complements the architectural and archaeological points of interest with other tangible aspects of rural life.

Maria im Paradies Monastery

Maria im Paradies Monastery was established in 1985 on the Kinderalm in Sankt Veit im Pongau, in the premises of a former sanatorium for lung diseases. It welcomes people who would like to take part in monastic life for a few days. This includes the Liturgy of the Hours, church services, Scripture readings, adoration, silence and time in nature. This combination makes the monastery a distinct travel option for people who wish to spend a few days not just sightseeing, but taking part in monastic life.

Cycling and hiking trails

For cyclists, the Tauern Cycle Path runs directly through Sankt Veit im Pongau. Hikers can choose between two other starting points: the trail to Schneeberg begins at the Hubertus Chapel; from a car park on the Kinderalm, a moderate ascent along a forest path leads to a summit. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Erzweg Kupfer trail also starts at the market square and covers 3.4 kilometres on foot; the stated walking time is 60 minutes. You can therefore choose between a cycling route through the town, a measured walking route starting at the market square, and hiking trails with other named starting points.
