Anthering can be explored through several distinct highlights: the Antheringer Au represents a protected natural landscape and wildlife, while Fuchsmühle and the parish church add historical interest. There are also trails with clearly distinct lengths and layouts, as well as a local railway connection to Salzburg. When planning your trip, you can therefore give different priority to nature, cultural heritage and outdoor activities.

Natural Areas and Trails

The Antheringer Au is a natural protected area with noteworthy scenery and diverse wildlife. Its features include a beaver pond and rare bird species such as the kingfisher and grey-headed woodpecker. The trail through the floodplain reaches the Salzach; you can continue hiking along its banks. Parking for visits to the Au is available at Anthering local railway station.

The Anthering Swing Trail offers another way to include outdoor activity in your stay, with two differently laid-out routes. The red route is 4 kilometres long and leads there and back to six varied swing stations. The green route is a 1-kilometre paved circular trail with no inclines and three swings. You can compare the options by distance, trail layout and number of stations: the green route is the shorter loop, while the red route is the longer there-and-back trail.

Mill, Church and Herb Garden

Fuchsmühle, on the Achartinger Bach, uses water power to grind grain. It was first mentioned in writing in 1638 and is one of the last Rückschüttmühlen in Europe. Anthering parish church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is one of the oldest churches in the Salzburg region. The present building dates from the 15th century and is characterised by late Gothic architecture. The dates therefore refer to different aspects: the mill’s first written mention and the construction period of the present church.

The herb garden also offers its own connection to culture and nature. Around 350 labelled medicinal plants grow across an area of more than 1,000 square metres. The garden is also home to the traditional Maria Wurzweih herb garden festival, held on 15 August. The garden, church and mill each offer a different focus for planning: medicinal plants and the garden festival, late Gothic architecture, or the history of the mill and water power.

Nearby Activities and Getting There

Anthering’s heated outdoor swimming pool is in the town centre. It has a separate children’s pool and several play structures. For cycling, you can join the Mozart Cycle Route or the Salzkammergut Cycle Route from Anthering. These are two separate ways to enjoy your stay by bike.

Raggei-Bräu offers a taste of Anthering: the brewery inn lies at the foot of the Haunsberg in Anthering and serves beers from its own brewery. The local railway connects Anthering with Salzburg every half hour. If you are considering taking the train, check the current timetable before travelling.

When choosing where to stay, you can consider which themes matter most to you: the trails and floodplain, the mill and church, nearby activities, or the railway connection to Salzburg. You do not have to combine every highlight during a short stay; start by choosing the experiences that best suit your travel plans.
