Gutenstein brings together striking scenery, hiking trails, pilgrimage sites and places associated with Ferdinand Raimund. During your stay, you can combine these different interests or focus on just one or two. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider your planned visits and how you will get around at the same time.

Scenery and views

From the Lange Brücke, you can enjoy the finest view of Gutenstein Castle Hill and its picturesque rocky cliffs. Forests also define the market town: about 91 percent of its area is wooded. This gives you two distinct perspectives on Gutenstein’s landscape: a specific viewpoint and the town’s forest cover.

Hiking trails, pilgrimage sites and a museum

The Kaisersteig circular hiking trail starts at the Waldbauernmuseum Gutenstein and leads to a ridge with a bench and views of the Schneeberg. The ridge is a clear landmark along the route and connects the trail with a named viewpoint.

At Mariahilfberg, pilgrims can visit viewpoints such as the Sieben-Väter-Kapelle and grottoes such as the Magdalenengrotte via well-maintained walking paths. Together, the monastery and church on the mountain rank among the best-known pilgrimage sites in Lower Austria. If you are interested in religious sites and walks, Mariahilfberg offers a distinct focus alongside the Kaisersteig.

At the Waldbauernmuseum, a sawmill transferred here from Oberpiesting adjoins the Alte HofmĂĽhle. The associated waterwheel operates during the summer season. This seasonal operation is a specific detail to bear in mind when planning a summer visit.

Church, castle and Raimund sites

Gutenstein Castle was built as a stone castle between 1195 and 1220 under the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI. Entry to the grounds of the Gutenstein castle ruins is currently not permitted; check before you travel whether this restriction is still in place. In the parish church, rubble-stone walls dating from the original construction period of 1220 have been preserved in the area of the tower and organ gallery.

At Gutenstein Mountain Cemetery stands the tomb monument for Ferdinand Raimund, erected and consecrated in 1837. Hubert Aratym decorated the Aratym Chapel at the mountain cemetery with murals in 1980. The artist, who was born in Gutenstein, was a painter, sculptor and set designer. These two places offer different points of interest: the tomb monument commemorates Raimund, while the chapel features Aratym’s murals.

The Raimund Museum Gutenstein is housed in a former inn where the poet Ferdinand Raimund (1790–1836) stayed several times. The museum commemorates his life and work. Together with the tomb monument, it provides a distinct connection to Raimund, separate from the town’s architectural and landscape themes.
