Kritzendorf can be explored through several distinct themes: local history, winegrowing, woodland, and cycling. You can plan your stay around your cultural interests, a themed trail, or a bike tour.

Church, Museum and Architectural History

The Catholic parish church of St. Vitus (Pfarrkirche St. Vitus) is protected as a historic monument by decree and was built around 1460. The Kritzendorf Village Museum focuses on working and everyday life in the first half of the 20th century. These offer different cultural perspectives: the church provides a glimpse into architectural history, while the museum explores work and everyday life in a later era.

Another architectural landmark is the Kritzendorf lido: architect Heinz Rollig designed the rotunda, the “bridge,” the weather shelter, and the changing-room blocks in 1927. When choosing a theme, you can compare the dates: the church is said to have been built around 1460, while the designs for the listed structures at the lido date from 1927. The Village Museum offers a different focus, exploring a period of everyday history rather than a single year of construction.

Wine and Woodland Trails

Along the Riedenwanderweg, information panels explain the origins of wine and winegrowing in Kritzendorf. The trail starts at Neudauerstraße or Hoheneggersteig. If you would like to combine a walk with a winegrowing theme, this trail is a useful guide for planning.

The Kritzendorf Nature Experience Trail has a different focus: partially interactive stations offer a playful way to learn about woodland habitats. The trail starts at the end of Kierlingergasse, a ten-minute walk from the village centre. When choosing between the two themed trails, you can first consider your interests: wine and winegrowing on the Riedenwanderweg, or woodland habitats on the Nature Experience Trail. The different starting points also help with orientation.

Cycling along the Danube and through the floodplain forest

The Danube Cycle Path can be reached near Kritzendorf railway station. Cycling is especially enjoyable along the “Durchstich,” a Danube channel created in the early 19th century, and through the strip of floodplain forest that formed alongside it. The channel’s history adds a distinct historical dimension to this cycling focus.

The Kritzendorf mountain bike loop includes scenic sections through the floodplain forest to the Uferhaus and onwards to Kritzendorf. This gives you a choice of different route features: on the Danube Cycle Path, the access point near the railway station, the channel, and the floodplain forest are key landmarks; on the mountain bike loop, the sections through the floodplain forest and to the Uferhaus are specified. Check current local information and the conditions on the mountain bike route before setting out.
