Tours and guided visits at Klosterneuburg Abbey begin in the Sala terrena. There are also museums, literary memorial sites, and paths through the Aupark and nature park. You can choose different focuses for your stay: art and local history, a wine-cellar tour, or time outdoors.
Abbey, Literature and Art
The Abbey Museum spans the period from the Babenberg family tree to the Gallery of Modern Art. A wine-cellar tour takes you through 900 years of wine production. Afterwards, you can taste wine at the Abbey wine shop, located in a 13th-century vaulted cellar.
The Franz Kafka Memorial Room is in the former Hoffmann sanatorium, where the author died. Exhibits include letters, photographs, documents, and memorabilia from Kafka’s stays at the University Clinic in Vienna and the Dr. Hoffmann Sanatorium. The memorial room also includes an extensive, freely accessible library of Kafka’s works, secondary literature, and translations into numerous languages.
ALBERTINA KLOSTERNEUBURG makes a large part of the ALBERTINA Museum’s art collection from the period after 1945 accessible to the public. Selected highlights from the sculpture collection are presented on the upper floor; specific exhibitions may change.
Local History and Research
The Klosterneuburg City Museum presents the permanent exhibition “Once upon a time …” about the city’s origins. Designed with children in mind, the exhibition begins with two mammoth teeth dating back approximately 8,000 years. The two historical trails offer different perspectives: the “Lower Town” route has 17 stops and begins at Niedermarkt. The “Upper Town” historical trail passes 20 stops and is around 3 km long.
In Maria Gugging, the VISTA Science Experience Center offers an interactive exhibition, workshops, and talks about research at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). The exhibition “Science in the Making – How is the knowledge of tomorrow created?” can be explored independently and free of charge during opening hours. Workshops and tours take place regularly, are free of charge, and require advance booking. As exhibition content and programs may change, check current opening hours and offerings before your visit.
Aupark, Nature Park and Hiking Trails
Klosterneuburg’s Aupark is a recreation area between the city and the floodplain forest. Its nature trail introduces children to nature through fun activities at various stops. The 5.6 km Aupark running route is intended for runners and Nordic walkers. The Eichenhain Nature Park has an entrance in Klosterneuburg Stadt near the Oberer Stadtfriedhof; the park offers around 36 km of marked hiking trails.
There are 115 varied hikes to choose from in the Klosterneuburg region. One specifically named route is the Klosterneuburg – Kollersteig – Leopoldsberg – Josefinenhütte – Josefsteig – Klosterneuburg hike, which is listed as taking 1.5 to 2 hours. When planning, consider the time you have available: in addition to hikes like these, there are also themed trails and a cycling route. The Klosterneuburg Genussradtour is 33.5 km long and starts at Happyland. It runs through the Eichenhain adventure park and offers views of Klosterneuburg and the Danube. As routes may change, check the route details before setting out.
Getting There and Regional Cuisine
S-Bahn line S40 runs from Vienna’s Heiligenstadt station towards Klosterneuburg-Kierling; from there, the abbey is a 15-minute walk. Bus routes 400 and 401 run from Heiligenstadt station to the Klosterneuburg–Stiftsgarten stop. From there, a ten-minute walk through the gardens leads to the visitor entrance in the Sala terrena. Check the timetable before you travel.
For a culinary addition, try Klosterneuburg’s Buschenschanken, also known as Heurige, which serve traditional local specialties. Together with the range of museums, hikes, and nature experiences, they give you a variety of options for tailoring your stay to your interests.
