Between the Town Centre and the Wagram Escarpment

The parish garden stretches from the town centre up to the Wagram escarpment. Visitors can stroll between old fruit trees to the parish garden pond. This means a walk through the garden also takes you from the town centre to the distinctive edge of the terrain. The Wagramfenster stands right at the Wagram escarpment in Königsbrunn am Wagram. The garden and the Wagramfenster thus offer two different points of connection to the same landscape.

Königsbrunn am Wagram lies on the southern edge of the Wagram, a distinctive loess escarpment in the western Weinviertel. The village's vineyards are situated on the Hausberg hill above Königsbrunn. Wines thrive on the southern slopes of the Wagram and mature in deep loess cellars; the fertile loess soils offer excellent conditions for viticulture in Königsbrunn am Wagram.

Wine Country and Trails

The signposted Königsbrunn Wine Trail offers views from the Wagram across the Tullnerfeld plain as far as Schneeberg and Ötscher. Vegetables are grown on the Tullnerfeld plain. The paths through the parish garden and the Wine Trail have different focuses: the garden walk leads between fruit trees to the pond, while the Wine Trail foregrounds views across the plain and towards the two mountains.

The Weinviertel Way of St. James also passes through the Königsbrunn parish. The pilgrim stamp is at the Friedenskapelle chapel by the cemetery. Visitors interested in cellar lanes can join Johanna Ettl for a tour of Königsbrunn's “Am Bromberg” cellar lane. Arrange the details of a tour before your trip.

History and Cellar Culture

The former mortuary chapel is a listed monument. Originally, it was a chapel built in 1804 that was also used as a mortuary. On the Pentecost weekend in 2021, the mortuary chapel opened as the Kunstraum Wagram art space with its first exhibition, “Landpartie Wagram”. One building thus brings together its former function and a clearly dated milestone in the town's art history.

Königsbrunn's longest water cellar is on the Hausberg hill, on the other side of the church, and belongs to the municipality. Its basin extends 15 metres into the hill. In Königsbrunn am Wagram, many homeowners channelled springs bubbling up from the Wagram's loess into masonry cellars. Alongside wine maturing in deep loess cellars, water cellars and spring enclosures are also part of the area's cellar and loess history.

Seasonal Events and Getting There

The annual young plants market in the parish garden takes place in late April or early May. Plant lovers can buy and sell home-grown plants there. As the dates vary, it is worth checking the specific date before travelling. In December, the parish garden may offer an Advent atmosphere with a bonfire, punch or mulled wine, and a small Christmas market. Dates and details for this seasonal event may also vary.

Königsbrunn am Wagram is easily reached from both Vienna and Krems via the nearby Stockerau expressway S5 and rail connections in the surrounding area. For your specific journey, choose a suitable connection and check the latest timetables before departure.
