Mödling combines an Art Nouveau theatre with urban history and distinctive natural landmarks. This makes it easier to choose a focus: you can combine culture in the city with nature, or shape your stay more around the forest, viewpoints and hiking trails. The centrally located railway station is also relevant for getting around; it connects Mödling with Vienna and Baden.

Theatre, Urban History and Historic Buildings

The Mödling City Theatre is housed in a theatre building constructed in the Art Nouveau style in 1912. Each season, it offers around 100 performance days, as well as numerous in-house productions and premieres. The theatre thus adds a distinctive cultural note to the city. Mödling Castle has a medieval character, while the theatre building, with its year of construction, represents a different architectural period.

The Mödling Museum – Thonetschlössl presents the city's history from the beginnings of settlement and displays finds from the Avar period that are unique worldwide. Those interested in the historical layers of the town can explore a broad span of time there. St. Othmar's Parish Church also reflects a long building history: at least six predecessor churches, dating from the 9th century onwards, lie beneath the present church.

A Way of the Cross with fifteen stations runs along wayside shrines at St. Othmar's Parish Church. They depict the Passion of Christ from Jesus's perspective. For a themed walking tour, Mödling also offers an audio guide through the Old Town and surrounding area. The stories cover history, art, architecture and Ludwig van Beethoven, bringing together different cultural themes in one tour.

City Forest, Hiking Trails and Landscapes

Mödling City Forest lies right next to the city centre and is considered a gateway to the Vienna Woods. Mödling's municipal forest offers international hiking trails through natural surroundings, with varying levels of difficulty. Anninger is a popular mountain biking area. These options offer different experiences, from trails through the municipal forest to mountain biking on Anninger.

The viewpoints and landscape features also vary. The Black Tower offers impressive views across the Vienna Basin. The Klausen area has rocky paths and old pine stands. Eichkogel is home to a nature reserve considered one of Austria's most valuable dry grassland areas. Forest, rocky landscapes and dry grassland therefore offer distinct nature experiences.

The Husarentempel is located in Föhrenberge Nature Park at an altitude of 496 metres. The present-day temple was built in 1813 by Joseph Kornhäusel as the “Temple of Military Glory”. It offers sweeping views across Föhrenberge Nature Park. By contrast, the Black Tower looks out over the Vienna Basin: the two viewpoints differ in the areas they bring into view.

Getting There and Choosing a Hotel

If you're looking for a hotel in Mödling, you can start by shaping your stay around your interests: the theatre, museum and development of the churches offer a different focus from the city forest, hiking trails and viewpoints. The centrally located railway station connects Mödling with Vienna and Baden. If you plan to include either of these cities in your trip, this connection is a useful point of reference for getting there.
