Wilfersdorf offers two distinct highlights to consider when planning your trip: Liechtenstein history and routes for walking or cycling. The parish church, the Way of the Cross on the Holy Mountain and the castle shape the cultural side; for routes, you can choose between a circular route, a cross-border route and a stated walking time of around six hours. You can tailor your stay according to whether historical themes, a longer bike ride or a hike should take priority.
Church, Crypt and Holy Mountain
The originally Gothic parish church in Wilfersdorf was extended in the Baroque style. Beneath its altar area, which is now furnished in a modern style, lies the Liechtenstein family crypt; the sarcophagi hold the ancestors of today’s Princely House of Liechtenstein. The crypt is only rarely open to visitors. Architectural history and dynastic remembrance thus form two distinct chapters of the town’s history.
The Wilfersdorf Way of the Cross, also known as the Calvary and Holy Mountain, was founded in 1674 by Prince Hartmann of Liechtenstein and his wife Elisabeth Sidonia. Since 1979, the Palm Sunday procession on the Holy Mountain has been part of the traditions of the Wilfersdorf village community. The foundation of the route and the procession’s later integration into local traditions provide two different points of reference in time for this religious highlight.
The pilgrimage route Faith in Stone begins at St. Nicholas Parish Church. It passes the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception and heads north towards the Farewell or Travellers’ Chapel. After 50 m, the route reaches its first station on the Wilfersdorf Way of the Cross on the Holy Mountain: the Mount of Olives group. The starting point, chapels and first station are thus part of a named sequence along the route.
Cycling Routes and Cross-Border Trails
Two different types of route are the main options for cycling. The Sylvaner themed cycle route is an approximately 60 km circular route connecting Wilfersdorf with Mistelbach, Asparn, Staatz and Poysdorf. The Liechtenstein cycle route starts at Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf, passes through Großkrut and Bernhardsthal into the Czech Republic, and continues past the castles of Lednice and Valtice. This offers a regional loop as well as a route that explicitly crosses the border.
There is also a cross-border themed trail for walkers, starting at the castle. It is 22 km long, with a stated walking time of around six hours. This time estimate provides a concrete point of reference for planning your day. By comparison, the Sylvaner themed cycle route is described by its approximate circular-route length, while the Liechtenstein cycle route is distinguished above all by its cross-border course.
Castle, Guided Tour and Getting There
A guided tour of Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf begins with basic information about the importance of the Liechtenstein family to the region. The castle first served as the setting for the Schlossfestival in 2003. If you plan your trip around a guided tour or event, check the relevant reservation information and current events calendar in advance.
Postbus 431 runs directly from Vienna to Wilfersdorf. From the Wilfersdorf bei Mistelbach Marktplatz stop, the castle is just a few minutes’ walk away. Check the latest timetable and stop information before travelling. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the castle with your chosen focus: for culture, the church and Way of the Cross history take centre stage; for longer outings, there are cycling and walking routes, each with its own type of distance information.
