Langenlois offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: vineyard trails, a lookout tower, local history and gardens. The attractions are easiest to distinguish by their focus: the WEINWEG connects the landscape with information about working in the vineyards, while the museum and town trail explore historical themes. Schiltern adds gardens and a model railway exhibition.

Wine Trails and Views

The WEINWEG Langenlois is a 6-kilometre hiking route through the Dechant, Käferberg, Steinhaus and Schenkenbichl vineyards. Information boards and unusual objects share insights into working in the vineyards. Along the WEINWEG, beside a viewing platform, stands the 7-metre-high sculpture “Traube am Käferberg” (“Grape on Käferberg”). The work is by Austrian artist Heimo Zobernig, is titled “ohne Titel 2005” (“Untitled 2005”), and is known in Langenlois as “Traube am Käferberg”.

The lookout tower on Gobelsberg, south of Gobelsburg, offers a different perspective. It stands on the 303-metre-high Gobelsberg and can be reached on foot from the town centre in 30 minutes. From there, the panoramic view stretches from the Tulln Basin across the Danube Valley to the foothills of the Alps. For those interested in longer hiking routes, the 100-kilometre Kremstal-Danube long-distance trail offers a different kind of experience: two of its 15 stages pass through Langenlois.

History and Culture

The Langenlois Local History Museum displays prehistoric finds from the region alongside insights into civic life, crafts, viticulture and the religious traditions of the people of Langenlois in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Among the exhibits is a mammoth tusk measuring 3.34 metres, the largest in Central Europe.

The Langenlois TOWN TRAIL “Der Syndikus von Langenlois” (“The Syndic of Langenlois”) follows the trail of a true crime story from 1824 through an audio crime drama. At its centre is the tragic end of tax collector Johann Hoffer. While the local history museum covers various aspects of life in the past, this trail focuses on one specific historical case.

The poetry slam tour “Langenloiser Ohrwürmer” (“Langenlois Earworms”) uses performances by Mieze Medusa and Markus Köhle to create a personal portrait of Langenlois. In Schiltern, the model railway exhibition at Schloss Schiltern presents Austria’s traditional and cultural landmarks at a scale of 1:87 across a 300 m² display layout. This gives it a different focus from Langenlois’s regional history: the emphasis is on miniature versions of Austrian landmarks.

Gardens and Wine Cellar Lanes

The Schiltern GARDEN TRAIL connects the Kittenberger Erlebnisgärten and the ARCHE NOAH show garden. It also leads to other gardens, historic community gardens, a wine cellar lane, garden businesses, artists, craftspeople, winemakers and wine taverns in the garden village of Schiltern. Unlike the WEINWEG, which shares information about working in the vineyards, this trail focuses on gardens and the garden village’s diverse surroundings.

The wine cellar lanes of Langenlois also bring together several aspects of the wine region: wines, delicacies from winemakers’ kitchens, wine festivals, convivial gatherings and views across the wine-growing landscape. The locations mentioned include Sauberg above Langenlois, Heiligenstein in Zöbing and Mittelberg. Individual wine taverns have varying opening dates; it is best to check them before your visit.
