Obermarkersdorf can be explored through precisely dated works of art and the parish church of St. Nicholas and Urban. For a different way of discovering the area, the family-friendly Urbanusweg runs through Obermarkersdorf, Waitzendorf and the town of Schrattenthal. This brings together a focus on local architectural and art history and a circular route linking several places—two different starting points when planning your stay around culture or the experience of a walking route.
Parish Church: Architectural History and Organ
The parish church of St. Nicholas and Urban was built between 1383 and 1389. Its exterior is Baroque, while the choir and north tower are Gothic; the north tower is the oldest part of the building. The church thus brings together features from different periods. If you are interested in architectural history, this contrast offers a particularly tangible point of interest.
The organ also adds to the historical and cultural perspective. It was built in 1759 by the Viennese organ builder Matthäus Jesswagner. It is one of only two remaining playable organs of its kind in Austria. Alongside the architecture, you can therefore see a dated instrument whose significance can be understood in comparison with others across Austria.
Wayside Shrine and Figures of Saints
At the edge of Obermarkersdorf, in the Aschingen vineyard, stands a niche wayside shrine dating from 1820. Inside is a Baroque statue titled “Christ at Rest,” dated to 1740. The dates refer to different parts: 1820 to the wayside shrine, and 1740 to the figure inside it. Further upstream along the route through Obermarkersdorf stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1742. The two statues were made just two years apart, while the niche wayside shrine was built later.
Urbanusweg Through Several Places
The family-friendly Urbanusweg circular route runs through Obermarkersdorf, Waitzendorf and the town of Schrattenthal, linking their sights. The route therefore takes in several places rather than focusing only on individual buildings and works of art in Obermarkersdorf. Along the foothills of the Manhartsberg, the Urbanusweg offers views across the municipality of Schrattenthal. If you would like to plan your stay around a route with several stops, this connection between the places offers a useful alternative to focusing on individual historical landmarks.
Views and Cycling Route in Schrattenthal
The Kalvarienberg vineyard in Schrattenthal offers a breathtaking view over the entire town. This provides a specifically named viewpoint within the town, in addition to the views along the Urbanusweg. For cycling enthusiasts, the Weinviertel DAC Cycling Route is another point of interest: it runs along the upper end of Schrattenthal.
Plan for the Pumpkin Festival
Obermarkersdorf’s Pumpkin Festival takes place in the village every five years. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the exact event dates in advance.
