Hoheneich brings together a Late Baroque pilgrimage church and a landscape shaped by ponds and paths. This gives the town two distinct focal points for planning a trip: architectural and pilgrimage history on the one hand, and bodies of water and nature on the other. If you are looking for accommodation in Hoheneich, you can first consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay. The details of the church and pond landscape make the choice more specific than a general search for attractions.

Pilgrimage Church: Architectural History and Statue of the Virgin Mary

The Parish and Pilgrimage Church of the Immaculate Conception is a Late Baroque central-plan building constructed by Andreas Zach in 1776–78. Its high altar dates from around 1780 and includes a statue of the Virgin and Child, revered as miraculous, from about 1480/90. Two periods far apart in time come together at this altar: the furnishings of the late 18th century and a statue of the Virgin Mary several centuries older. A miracle door in the church dates from 1621. The building, altar, statue and door thus offer different, clearly datable perspectives on local art and church history.

The pilgrimage tradition is also associated with the miracle of Count Kollonitsch’s conversion in 1621, which plays a central role in the pilgrimage site’s history. The tradition was particularly linked to annual celebrations on the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, September 8. The church’s significance therefore encompasses not only its architecture, but also a traditional story and a specific feast day in the religious calendar.

Pond Landscape and Nature

The Hoheneich ponds were created in the 13th century through human intervention. Today they provide valuable habitats for rare plants and animals and are among Austria’s “Important Bird Areas.” The pond landscape lies between Hoheneich and Pürbach in the Waldviertel; paths run along larger and smaller bodies of water. Both the individual ponds and the paths between them are therefore part of the landscape.

Mitterteich is a swimming pond surrounded by reed beds and marshland. This gives it a different character from the wider pond landscape, which serves as a habitat for rare plants and animals. If you are interested in Hoheneich’s natural side, you can focus on this individual swimming pond or on the broader landscape with its bodies of water and paths.

Fischersteig and Seasonal Refreshments

Fischersteig runs along a narrow path beside the Braunaubach stream. After a small rise, a view opens up over Hoheneich and its church. The stream and viewpoint give this path two distinct features: along the stream, the narrow path shapes the experience, while at the viewpoint the town and its church come into view.

dieMitterteichhĂĽtte is located beside a natural swimming pond in the middle of the Hoheneich forest, as well as on the Waldviertel Cycle Route and Cycle Route No. 73. Between May and September, it offers visitors and locals cold refreshments and a selection of light cold and hot dishes. For cyclists, its location on two named cycle routes goes hand in hand with a seasonal place to stop for refreshments. If you plan to visit the hut, check in advance whether it will be open on your visit date.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up the different focal points: the church represents Late Baroque architectural history, older sacred art and pilgrimage tradition. The ponds and Fischersteig, in turn, offer different ways to experience water, habitats and paths; the hut adds a seasonal place to stop for refreshments along the cycle routes. You can tailor your search for accommodation in Hoheneich to the things you are most interested in seeing locally.
