Groß-Schweinbarth offers visitors a chance to experience the Weinviertel landscape, local history and wine. The gently rolling surroundings are ideal for hiking, walking and cycling. The Hollow Way Loop adds a route with specific details on its length and approximate duration. The Königsberg hollow way, Zeisselthal wine cellar lane and the parish church dedicated to St Martin each have their own appeal. You can choose your focus depending on whether you would most like to discover trails, nature, architectural heritage or wine.
Hiking and nature at the Königsberg hollow way
The Hollow Way Loop is 5.0 km long and takes about 55 minutes. The route passes through the “Königsberg Hollow Way” natural monument. The hollow way is home to remarkable and rare animal and plant life, including bee-eaters. The route length and approximate duration give you a specific basis for planning your time, without having to estimate the walking time from other information. From the wooded hills around Groß-Schweinbarth, views stretch across the Marchfeld to the Danube floodplains and Vienna. Alongside the route, the natural surroundings and views offer further ways to shape your stay in the Weinviertel.
Rest stops and Zeisselthal wine cellar lane
The Weinviertel rest area in Groß-Schweinbarth has a pergola, a bench-and-table set, bicycle parking and a waste bin. A Weinviertel flag and an information board about the surrounding area complete the site. The rest area is set up for both a seated break and a look at the surroundings.
At the lower end of Zeisselthal wine cellar lane, there is a small rest area and information boards about the village. The lane is suitable for a short stop on a cycling tour or a peaceful walk. The two places to take a break therefore have different features: the Weinviertel rest area focuses on seating and bicycle parking, while Zeisselthal offers a connection to local history through its information boards.
Parish church and listed buildings
The parish of Groß-Schweinbarth has existed since 1560. The village’s patron saint and the Catholic parish church are dedicated to St Martin. Culture enthusiasts can also visit several buildings with different heritage protection designations. As of 30 June 2025, Schloss Groß-Schweinbarth at Hauptstraße 2 was protected as a listed building by official decision. At that time, the Meierhof (former museum) at Hauptstraße 15, the granary at Hofkeller 7 and the Catholic parish church of St Martin at Kirchenplatz 1 were protected by ordinance. This information reflects the status at that time; it does not promise access to the buildings.
Wine and tasting events
The annual new-wine tasting “JungWEIN und WildSCHWEIN” offers an opportunity to sample wines from Groß-Schweinbarth. The “Open Cellar Door Day” is another such opportunity. The two events give wine enthusiasts different occasions to discover local wines. Check the event dates before your trip if you would like to plan your visit around one of them.
Two Heuriger wine taverns and the winemakers’ group at the Meierhof contribute to Groß-Schweinbarth’s dining options. Individual businesses’ opening days may change, so check their dates in advance. This lets you take wine and tasting options into account when planning, while the Hollow Way Loop, the Königsberg hollow way and local history offer other highlights during your visit, regardless.
