Oberwaltersdorf combines a distinctive industrial and art history with a floodplain landscape along the Triesting. Its connections to Broncia Koller and the Old Spinning Mill give the town’s history a unique character; historic buildings, the swimming pond and a cycle route add to the possibilities for a stay. This makes it possible to plan culture and time outdoors as separate highlights.

Industry, Art and Architectural History

The Old Spinning Mill is one of the few industrial monuments in Lower Austria to have been preserved in almost its original condition. Its history dates back to a plot of land acquired in 1818 for a spinning mill. The Oberwaltersdorf local history museum is housed in the bedding factory; its focus is on researching the painter Broncia Koller.

From 1912/13, parts of the industrial complex served as a studio and residence for Broncia Koller. Josef Hoffmann designed the extension to the Koller buildings. The Koller House became a meeting place for Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Egon Schiele and other members of Viennese society. It is privately owned. The connection between industrial history, painting and architecture therefore offers a distinctive way to explore the town’s history.

The parish church of St James the Greater also brings together history and architecture: it is dedicated to St James the Greater, and the oldest documentary record of it dates from 1252. Entries in the monuments register dated 23 June 2026 list Oberwaltersdorf Castle with its granary and the former synagogue building at Badener StraĂźe 13 as protected monuments under an order pursuant to Section 3. The Catholic parish church and the Visintini footbridge are protected under a regulation.

The Europa Fountain was built at Kirchenplatz in September 1997. It contains a stone from each EU member state. Alongside the older buildings, the fountain adds another, more recent feature to the townscape.

The Triesting Floodplain and Swimming Pond

A floodplain landscape stretches along the Triesting west and north of Oberwaltersdorf. The Triestingau cycle route passes through Oberwaltersdorf; its route description mentions flat paths along the Triesting through a natural floodplain. This offers a distinct option alongside the cultural attractions for anyone who would rather spend their time combining a cycle ride with the landscape.

The Oberwaltersdorf swimming pond is a 0.5-hectare lake surrounded by a large sunbathing lawn and shade-providing trees. There is also beach volleyball and giant chess at the pond. The landscape, space to relax and games are all available here, offering different ways to spend time outdoors.
