In Neuhaus, the history of the castle and church, contemporary art and paths through the landscape come together. When planning your visit, it is important to check the relevant visiting arrangements: castle tours are available by prior appointment, and sculptures in the open-air grounds of the studio are displayed seasonally. For tours and routes, it is worth checking dates and route conditions in advance.
Castle Complex and Church History
The place name Neuhaus derives from the castle, or fortified house, documented in records around 1249. A later chapter in the castle’s history followed in 1694, when two Venetians established a mirror factory there. The two dates mark different stages: the documented origin of the place name and the castle’s later use for mirror production.
The parish church is part of the castle complex. It was built between 1610 and 1612 as a Protestant Church of the Redeemer with a family crypt. The VIA SACRA, the well-known pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell, also passes by it. In Neuhaus, the history of the church building and a pilgrimage route that extends beyond the local area are thus closely connected.
Today, the renovated main castle, together with the rose garden, parish hall, castle terrace, castle hall and “Gwölb”, forms the Burg Neuhaus event centre. Groups of five or more can join a castle tour at 10 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month by prior appointment. Check the date and make a reservation before your visit, as arrangements may change. The expert-led Sommerfrische Neuhaus tours visit surviving objects from that period; here, too, you should check in advance whether a tour date is available.
Art at Atelier Bajadere
Founded in 2013, Atelier Bajadere is a gallery for contemporary visual art, with a focus on painting. Its programme includes ten to twelve exhibitions each year. From May to October, sculptures and other sculptural works are also displayed in the open-air grounds. The studio thus combines a clear artistic focus with a seasonal outdoor exhibition. If you are coming especially to see the outdoor works, check in advance whether they will be on display during your visit.
Pond, Walking Paths and Cycling Routes
Neuhaus Pond was declared a natural monument in 1987. It was restored between 2000 and 2001, including the creation of a shallow-water zone. Further measures aimed to improve water quality and make the pond more attractive to visitors seeking recreation. The protected status and restoration describe two different aspects of the pond: its designation as a natural monument and later interventions with specific recreation and quality goals.
There are several options for walking routes. A footpath leads from Neuhaus Castle to the forest school. On the GroĂźe Peilsteinrunde via Hafnerberg, the descent to Neuhaus alternates between meadows and patches of woodland. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out on a hike.
A mostly flat cycling route connects Neuhaus and Weissenbach. In Weissenbach, it links up with cycling routes towards Kaumberg–Hainfeld and Berndorf–Leobersdorf; check these onward connections before setting off.
