In Wolfsbach, local history and landscape coexist in different forms. The parish church stands slightly elevated in the town center and is surrounded by a cemetery. There is also a 4.5-kilometer meditation trail, a regional circular hiking trail spanning more than 110 kilometers, and Grillenberg, east of the town. This gives you a choice when planning your trip between church architecture, art, nature observation, and hikes on different scales.

Hiking trails on different scales

The Wolfsbach Meditation Trail is 4.5 kilometers long and leads through the varied landscape in the heart of the Mostviertel. It is described as a spiritual trail; gentle hills, dark coniferous forests, and rows of trees shape the landscapes mentioned. You can also discover distinctive features of the fauna and flora along the way. If you are interested in nature observation and a trail’s spiritual character, this route combines both themes over a manageable distance.

The “Heart of the Mostviertel Circular Hiking Trail” covers a much larger regional area. It is more than 110 kilometers long and divided into eight stages. The route connects Aschbach-Markt, Biberbach, Ertl, Seitenstetten, St. Peter in der Au, Weistrach, and Wolfsbach. Along the way, information points explain the significance of the Mostviertel pear and the region’s rich history. This hike therefore involves not only the stages, but also thematic insights into the landscape and regional history.

The distances make the difference between the two trails clear: the meditation trail is listed as 4.5 kilometers, while the circular hiking trail covers more than 110 kilometers and eight stages. This can help you decide what kind of hike you would like to focus on during your trip, without treating the two offerings as a single route.

Church architecture and earlier building history

The Wolfsbach parish church is a Late Gothic hall church with a west tower set in front and a recessed polygonal choir. The church interior also features specific architectural details: rich net rib vaults, as well as newly uncovered Late Gothic seating and relic niches. Anyone interested in architectural forms can look at both the exterior structure and the design of the interior.

Archaeological investigations at the parish church also revealed a towerless Carolingian hall church, probably dating from the 9th century. Its date is therefore considered probable. This discovery adds an earlier building form to the Late Gothic features, although the two churches do not share the same architecture.

Village chapel and art project

Another way to explore local history is to visit the Wolfsbach village chapel. It was built in 2003 through collaboration between the municipality and the local cultural association, based on a design by DI HR Friedrich Fischer. Its features include the art project “Full House” by Manfred Erjautz, which received funding from the Province of Lower Austria.

The project uses around 100 glass cubes to present a “family portrait of the municipality of Wolfsbach” at the turn of the millennium. This means the chapel is characterized not only by its year of construction and design: its artistic features also refer to the municipality and its community at the time. The church architecture and art project offer different points of focus, each with its own themes for a culturally oriented stay.

Views and regional setting

From Grillenberg, east of Wolfsbach, you can enjoy views of the foothills of the Alps, stretching from Ă–tscher to Traunstein. These two named peaks provide a specific frame for the panorama. While the hiking trails describe landscapes along their routes, Grillenberg is all about the view across the foothills of the Alps. Wolfsbach is also on the MoststraĂźe.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wolfsbach, your preferred focus for the trip can be a useful starting point: would you like local history, with the parish church and village chapel, to be the main focus; are you more interested in nature observation and views; or are you planning a hike on one of the routes, which vary in length?
