Sankt Andrä lies on a river terrace above the Lavant in the Lavant Valley. There are several different themes to choose from during your stay: religious and urban history, trails with various stops, and the recurring Gackern festival. This lets you decide which discoveries you want to shape your trip, rather than trying to fit every theme into one itinerary.

Churches and traces of the city’s history

The cathedral church is considered one of the oldest churches in the Lavant Valley. Its historic features include remnants of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes depicting the crucifixion of Jesus, as well as notable tombstones of bishops and provosts of the Diocese of Lavant. Maria Loreto is another landmark church in Sankt Andrä: this pilgrimage and wedding church dates back to the 17th century. Since 21 July 2014, it has been Carinthia’s second minor basilica, alongside Maria Luggau.

The city’s history can also be explored through specific architectural and exhibition details beyond its churches. The Tränktor is the last surviving historic entrance in Sankt Andrä. The city’s fortification with a wall and moat is documented in a record dated 18 April 1339. At the “Room of History,” the story of Sankt Andrä is brought to life through exhibits that are predominantly owned by the municipality. These points of interest range from a dated historical record to exhibitions on local history.

Circular trails and stops around the city

The St. Andrä Panorama Trail traces the city’s history from its first settlement to the present day at 14 steles. At each stele, visitors can use the “Cultural Places” mobile app to find information about the city and its surroundings. The panoramic tour offers a different kind of experience: it leads through the city center, with 15 unique interactive stations. If a historical overview presented on steles is important to you, consider the Panorama Trail; if you’re interested in interactive stations in the city center, the panoramic tour may be a good option.

The signposted Kneipp circular hiking trail has a defined route and an approximate duration. It starts at the cathedral church, passes through the “Forbidden Gardens,” and returns to its starting point. Allow about an hour for the circuit, plus time spent at the Kneipp stations. If you like to linger at the stations, it’s best to account for this extra time in your day’s plans.

The St. Andrä Bee Educational Trail is a 5.5-kilometer circular route that starts at the St. Andräer See leisure facility. The facility is a swimming destination located directly on the Lavant Cycle Path. If you plan to visit the lake, check the seasonal operating conditions before you travel. This way, you can consider the trail’s specific length and your planned swimming visit as separate parts of your itinerary.

Planning your festival visit and stay

Gackern is a recurring festival in St. Andrä. In 2027, it will be held for the 26th time. At the festival on Loretowiese, visitors can enjoy specialties featuring chicken and turkey. If you’d like to plan your stay around Gackern, check the event dates for your travel period. This lets you treat the festival as a separate focus alongside churches, city history and circular trails.

When looking for a hotel in Sankt Andrä, it helps to first decide what you want from your trip: are churches and city history your main focus, would you like to explore one of the trails described here, or are you planning a visit for Gackern? Then compare the locations of specific offers with your plans.
