Rammersdorf is an agricultural hamlet. When choosing accommodation, it is worth distinguishing the character of the village from the themes of nearby excursions: in Völkermarkt, the old town fortifications and the town wall trail take centre stage; archaeological and historical sites can also be found in the surrounding area. The Völkermarkt Reservoir offers a water-based excursion option in the wider region. This can help you focus your hotel search on whether the rural character, history, or activities on the water matter most to you.

Town Fortifications and Historical Traces

In Völkermarkt, the round tower of the former town castle remains as part of the old town fortifications. The town wall trail shows how the rise in the terrain towards the Drava was used strategically. The tower and trail offer two different ways to explore the town’s history: one leads to a surviving part of the fortifications, while the other reveals the importance of the terrain to their strategic layout.

A different historical era begins at the foot of Lamprechtskogel. In the area around Rammersdorf lies a Hallstatt-period burial ground with cremation graves dating from the 7th and 5th centuries BC. Exhibits are held at the Völkermarkt Museum. Heunburg is also nearby: it was first mentioned in a document in 1103 under the name “Hunburch” and is privately owned. The burial ground and castle thus represent different historical points of reference—early burials on the one hand and a first mention in a document on the other.

The branch church of St Catherine on Kulm and the ruins of Mittertrixen Castle are also among the sights of Völkermarkt in the area around Rammersdorf. An assessment dated 28 May 2024 lists both as sights. In the wider region, the Völkermarkt District Heritage Museum offers insights into the region’s history, particularly the events of the Carinthian defensive struggle and the 1920 Carinthian plebiscite. The historical themes therefore range from archaeological finds and fortifications to events of the 20th century.

Water Activities and Getting There

If you would like to focus on something other than historical sites, the Völkermarkt Reservoir in the wider region offers opportunities for fishing, rowing, paddling, and boating. These activities provide different ways to enjoy a stay by the water and are an option in their own right, alongside the sights in and around Völkermarkt.

A published timetable for route 5402, valid from 15 December 2024, lists the stop “Rammersdorf b.Völkermarkt Abzw Ort.” Check current departure times before travelling. If you are planning a cycling tour, you can include the R6B cycle path. Check the signage and route conditions in advance.
