Neuhaus offers a variety of reasons to visit: contemporary art, Gothic painting, routes by the water and regional Had'n culture. When planning your trip, it is worth considering seasonal offerings as well as the town’s historical and artistic themes. This will help you decide whether your travel dates are better suited to a museum visit, summer hikes or the Hadnfest.
Art and History in Neuhaus
The Liaunig Museum has one of the most extensive collections of contemporary Austrian art from 1945 onwards. In the 2026 season, it is open from 26 April to 31 October, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm. If you are visiting in a later season, check the opening hours in effect at that time. KunstSinnNeuhaus am Weg connects the town of Neuhaus with the Liaunig Museum. The 1.2-kilometre route is designed as a sculpture trail and family fitness trail, adding art along the way to the connection.
The Neuhaus/Suha parish church is a Gothic church dating from the second half of the 14th century; its Gothic wall paintings date from around 1400. The Patek Mill in the village of Bach offers a different historical connection: it was built in 1853, revitalised in 1992 and converted into a farmers’ museum in 1996. Sacred architecture and wall paintings thus stand alongside the history of a mill and its later transformation.
Contemporary art also makes its own distinctive statement. Bernhard Wolf’s installation “Leuchtturm/Svetilnik” at Trafo Neuhaus addresses the climate crisis with the inscription “+15 °”. Built from larch wood in 2021, the Sunbeam Tower links its design to the passage of the day: its shadows move in the rhythm of the day, like those of a sundial.
Routes, Water and Activity
The Pudlach/Neuhaus Water Experience Trail leads through the forest to the Drau, to the mouth of the Motschula stream and along the stream’s riparian landscape. A Kneipp trail runs along the route; at the end, there is a zip line for children. The route therefore combines connections to the landscape with two specific stops, each with its own character.
The Neuhaus Sun Meadow is open to the general public and visitors. Guided wild herb hikes are offered there in summer. As these hikes are seasonal, check the dates before your visit.
Cyclists will also find a variety of routes in Neuhaus. The Drau Cycle Path runs directly through the town; Stage 5 passes here. The Santa Lucia suspension bridge is located on the Neuhaus municipal boundary, where cyclists can join the “Kunst-Radweg” (Art Cycle Path). Neuhaus is also a member municipality of the Karawanken UNESCO Global Geopark. This designation adds a regional landscape connection to your route planning without implying that the individual trails are the same.
Had'n Culture and Local Leisure Spots
The traditional Hadnfest takes place every September as a food festival featuring local restaurants and direct marketers. You can try Had'n-Kranznudeln at the Had'n hosts in Neuhaus. Participating businesses may vary, so check what is on offer before your visit. The seasonally open museum, the herb hikes offered in summer and the September festival each provide different options for choosing when to visit.
The Schwabegg sports and leisure facility includes, among other things, a drinking fountain, goals, floodlighting and a beach volleyball net. As facilities at public leisure sites may change, check the current information before your visit if needed.
