Wernberg offers two distinct travel interests: nature watching around the Drau loop and architectural history ranging from religious reliefs to castle complexes. At the Drau loop, birdlife and aquatic habitats take centre stage; at the historic sites, specific features and dates help distinguish between different eras. This lets you decide which theme should shape your stay when planning your trip.

Natural surroundings and birdwatching

Around 130 bird species have been recorded in the Wernberg Drau loop. This figure represents a total accumulated over an extended period. The still water is a habitat for breeding birds and migratory species. Together, these details describe the birdlife from two perspectives: as a recorded number of species and as a habitat for birds at different stages of their migration and breeding seasons.

The Municipality of Wernberg, in cooperation with the “NaTour ErLeben” association, offers three-hour “Bird Watching” tours. The dates for 2026 are seasonal; check before your trip whether a date fits your plans. The stated duration gives the guided birdwatching a clear time frame. This lets you fit it into your day’s plans, rather than treating it as a longer programme with no specified duration.

Trails and views

The Slow Trail Kloster Wernberg follows partly natural trails from a historic three-storey Renaissance building with an attached farm into an ornithologically interesting area, the Drau loop. This brings together two different ways to explore nature: a three-hour guided tour focused on birdwatching, and a trail description that combines the Renaissance building, the type of path and the Drau loop destination. When choosing between them, you can consider whether a guided observation with a stated duration or the combination of architecture and natural surroundings matters more to you.

Sternberg, at 733 metres, offers views of the surrounding area. It provides another landscape highlight alongside the Drau loop. Together with the birdwatching and the trail into the ornithologically interesting area, it offers a choice of different nature experiences without suggesting that they are the same: the Drau loop is known for its birdlife and habitat, while Sternberg offers views of the surrounding area.

Architectural history across several eras

The Gerichtsstein features reliefs on its cube-shaped top depicting the birth, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ. The images can be read in this order as a religious cycle. Damtschach Castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the southern foothills of the Ossiacher Tauern, in the municipality of Wernberg. Its romantic landscaped park has been placed under heritage protection by the Federal Monuments Authority. The building thus brings together a clearly established period of construction and a protected park.

Aichelberg Castle Ruins were built around 1200 by the Knights of Aichelberg and renovated in 2016. The two dates make tangible the gap between the medieval construction and the later renovation. Kloster Wernberg also has a long history: originally, it was a castle dating from 1227. Since 1935, it has been a monastery of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood. The dates distinguish the original castle complex from its later monastic history, rather than combining both into a single building phase.

Getting here and planning your visit

The Drau Cycle Path passes through the municipality of Wernberg. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the latest route details for your travel date. Wernberg can also be reached by public transport at regular intervals; for your specific journey, check the timetable for your travel day. Both notes help with planning without assuming a particular connection or frequency.

The Kloster restaurant uses seasonal products from Carinthia. If locally sourced products are important to your meal plans, this seasonal focus is a useful point of reference. Check opening hours and the menu before your visit. This lets you include the restaurant in your plans while taking its seasonal focus into account.
