Ledenitzen lies at the foot of the 2,145-metre-high Mittagskogel. The mountain gives the village a distinctive landmark to help you plan your stay. The choice of hike is particularly straightforward: the walking times distinguish the route from Ledenitzen to Berta-HĂĽtte from the section starting at the hut.
Plan hikes on Mittagskogel
The normal route up Mittagskogel leads either along a leisurely forest road or via a steeper climb through the forest to Bertahütte. From there, continue to the summit via the normal ascent. The options therefore differ in the climb up to the hut; describing the forest road as “leisurely” does not indicate a walking time.
The walk from Ledenitzen to Berta-HĂĽtte takes about three hours. From the hut, trail no. 680 leads to Mittagskogel in two hours; the ascent involves 650 metres of elevation gain. These are two separate sections to account for when planning your day: the first leads to the hut, and the second from there to the summit. This gives you a better sense of the time required than considering only the summit section. So be sure not to confuse the two stated walking times with a single estimate for the entire hike.
When choosing a route, you can first consider which ascent to BertahĂĽtte better suits your plans: the forest road or the steeper climb through the forest. Trail no. 680 then covers the section from the hut to Mittagskogel, with its own walking time and elevation gain. This keeps the route choice and the summit section clear as two separate planning considerations.
The trail and pony rides as other options
There is also a clearly identified starting point for a bike ride: the entrance to the Bleiberg Trail T51 can be reached from the car park by Ledenitzen cemetery via the “Transfer Bleiberg Trail T51” access route. If you plan to ride the trail, you can include this named starting point in your day’s itinerary. No walking time or difficulty rating for the trail is specified.
Pony rides are offered at Ponyhof KlippKlapp in Ledenitzen on Lake Faak. The activity is also suitable for beginners. In bad weather, pony rides take place in the covered riding arena. Availability depends on the date, so check in advance whether an appointment is available for your preferred day. This lets you plan the activity for a specific date, while the hikes can be timed mainly by their walking times and elevation gains.
Getting there and finding accommodation
Bus route 302 connects Villach, Lake Faak, Ledenitzen and Föderlach. The stated period of operation is from 7 April to 1 November 2026. If you would like to use this connection to get there or travel around on your day of travel, check the timetable for your date.
When looking for a hotel in Ledenitzen, your planned activities can be a useful starting point. For Mittagskogel, two hiking sections with different walking times are relevant; the Bleiberg Trail has a named starting point, and pony rides require an appointment. Consider which of these planning questions matters most for your stay.
