Köstenberg combines church architecture with a museum collection devoted to everyday life and agriculture. There are also two routes of very different lengths: a walking loop and a longer cycling tour. This lets you tailor your stay to your cultural interests or preferred level of activity.

Church and Museum: Building History and Everyday Life

The parish church of St. Philip and St. James the Younger stands on the edge of a rocky escarpment in the middle of the clustered village. The term “clustered village” describes an irregularly grouped settlement; the church is therefore both within the village and on the edge of the rock. The present-day choir was built in the 14th century. The third storey of the west tower is fortified, with keyhole-shaped loopholes. These openings are part of the fortification and emphasize the defensive function of this section of the tower. The choir, dated to a particular period, and the tower storey with its defensive features thus represent two distinct architectural aspects.

The museum collection comprises around 400 objects dating from the last quarter of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. It preserves the heritage of the past and encourages visitors to learn about everyday life. The agricultural exhibition covers work from sowing to harvest, as well as livestock farming, the production of animal products and means of transport. These themes link fieldwork and animal husbandry with produce and transport, offering a broad view of agricultural activities. In Köstenberg, two distinct ways of exploring the past come together: church architecture and a collection whose subjects also include everyday life.

On Foot or by Bike

The “Through the Hinterland around Lake Wörthersee” cycling tour continues to Köstenberg; from there, the descent towards Wernberg begins. The full tour is approximately 75 kilometres long and has about 1,200 metres of elevation gain. Take both figures into account when planning: the distance indicates the length of the route, while the elevation gain gives an idea of the terrain.

The “Köstenberg–Sternberg–Oberwinklern” loop starts either at the parish church or at the cemetery in Köstenberg and heads south. It is 17 kilometres long, has 450 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately five to six hours to walk. The stated walking time provides a concrete guide when choosing a route to fit the time you have available.

A direct comparison shows a 17-kilometre loop with a walking time of around five to six hours and a cycling tour of approximately 75 kilometres with about 1,200 metres of elevation gain. The different route measurements can help guide your choice, rather than treating the two activities as equivalent outings.

Plan Your Golf Around the Season
